येऽभ्यर्थितामपि च तो नृगतिं प्रपन्ना
ज्ञानं च तत्त्वविषयं सहधर्मं यत्र ।
नाराधनं भगवतो वितरन्त्यमुष्य
सम्मोहिता विततया बत मायया ते ॥
ye’bhyarthitām api ca no nṛ-gatiṁ prapannā
jñānaṁ ca tattva-viṣayaṁ saha-dharma yatra |
nārādhanaṁ bhagavato vitaranty amuṣya
sammohitā vitatayā bata māyayā te ||

[Brahmā to Maitreya:] “Bata! (Alas!) Even those who have attained a human state [i.e., life] wherein jñāna (awareness) relating to Tattva along with dharma are present, which is sought by us [i.e., by Brahmā and the other devas], but do not offer worship to Bhagavān [i.e., he who is source of all dharma and all jñāna] are thoroughly bewildered by his all-pervading māyā.”
Commentary
yasyāṁ nṛ-gatau bhagavad-dharma-paryanto dharmo bhavati, bhagavad-paryantasya tattvasya jñānaṁ ca bhavatīty arthaḥ |

“[‘Wherein jñāna relating to Tattva along with dharma are present’ means] The human state in which dharma extending up to Bhagavad-dharma is present, and awareness of Tattva extending up to Bhagavān is also present. This is the meaning.”
te amuṣya māyayā mohitāḥ, dharma-jñānayor api bhaktiṁ vinā phalāsiddher iti bhāvaḥ | yad vā, yatra dharma-sahitaṁ jñānaṁ kurvanti na tv ārādhanaṁ, te mohitāḥ | yad vā, bhagavata evārādhanaṁ bhagavate na dadati, tat-sukha-tātparyatayā na kalpayanti, te sakāma-bhaktā apīti |

“They [i.e., those aforementioned] are bewildered by his māyā because without bhakti non-attainment of the goal occurs even when one has dharma and jñāna. This is the purport. Alternately, [the sense of ‘wherein jñāna relating to Tattva along with dharma are present’ means those who have attained a human state] wherein they cultivate jñāna along with dharma but do not engage in worship [of Bhagavān] are bewildered. Alternately, those who do not give worship to Bhagavān, that is, those who do not act with the intent of satisfying him, [that is, those] who are desirous (sakāma) bhaktas, too [are bewildered by his māyā].”
