यत्पादपांसुर्बहुजन्मकृच्छ्रतो
धृतात्मभिर्योगिभिरप्यलभ्यः ।
स एव यद्दृग्विषयः स्वयं स्थितः
किं वर्ण्यते दिष्टमतो व्रजौकसाम् ॥

yat-pāda-paṁśur bahu-janma-kṛcchrato
dhṛtātmabhir yogibhir apy alabhyaḥ |
sa eva yad-dṛg-viṣayaḥ svayaṁ sthitaḥ
kiṁ varṇyate diṣṭam aho vrajaukasām ||

“Aho! How can the fortune be described of these residents of Vraja, the sole object of whose vision present directly [before them] is he the dust of whose feet is unattainable even by yogīs who have painstakingly controlled their minds for many births?”

Commentary

cakṣur-indriyasya viṣayo rūpam evety atra yojyaṁ sa svayaṁ yeṣāṁ dṛg-viṣaya eva sthitaḥ sthairyeṇa babhūva | yathā hi cakṣur-indriyeṇa rūpam eva gṛhyate na tu rasa-gandhādi tathā teṣāṁ cakṣurbhiḥ śrī-kṛṣṇa eva gṛhyate nānyat tat-snehākṛṣṭa-cittatayā sākṣād vidyamānasyāpy anyasyādarśanāt | yad vā yathānyeṣāṁ cakṣuṣā ghaṭa-paṭādi-pratyakṣa niścayena gṛhyate, tathā teṣāṁ cakṣuṣā sarvatra sarvam eva sākṣāt śrī-kṛṣṇatayā gṛhyate nānyatheti | yathoktaṁ śrī-jayadevena ‘paśyati diśi diśi rahasi bhavantam’ iti, evaṁ saha-vihāra-saubhāgyād api gopī-sadṛśa-premṇā sarvatra sadā sākṣād-bhagavat-parisphūrti-saubhāgya-mahimādhikaḥ syād evety asya paścān-nirdeśaḥ saṅgaccheta |

“He who is the sole object (viṣayaḥ) of the eye-sense [is the meaning of the phrase eva yādṛg viṣayaḥ in SB 10.12.12]. Here ‘he directly’ (sa svayaṁ) has become fixed, that is, has steadily remained, the sole object of the vision of whom [i.e., of these residents of Vraja, viz., the cowherd boys]’ it is to be added [to construe the sense of the third line in the verse]. As form alone is perceived by the eye-sense, and not, rather, taste, smell, and so on, so Śrī Kṛṣṇa alone is perceived by their [viz., these cowherd boys’] eyes and not anyone else because of [their] non-observance even of another present directly [in front of them] on account of [their] being of heart attracted [alt., pulled] by affection for him [alt., by his affection for them]. Alternately, as ocular evidence of a pot, cloth, or otherwise is perceived with certainty by others’ eyes, so verily everything everywhere is perceived by their eyes as being Śrī Kṛṣṇa directly, and not otherwise. As it is stated by Śrī Jayadeva [in Gīta-govinda 6.2], ‘[Sitting] In solitude, she [viz., Rādhā] sees you [alone] in every direction,’ so the greatness of the [cowherd boys’] fortune of [experiencing] revelation (parisphūrti) of Bhagavān directly always and everywhere by virtue of prema akin to [that of] the gopīs shall verily be [understood to be] greater than even the fortune [they also enjoy] of sporting together [with Śrī Kṛṣṇa in person during the day in the forest]. Thus, its [i.e., this quality of always and everywhere perceiving only Kṛṣṇa’s] latter mention [in SB 10.12.12 after the mention of their enjoying with him in person in the preceding verse] is appropriate.”
