विमुक्ताखिलतर्षैर्या मुक्तिरपि विमृग्यते ।
या कृष्णेनातिगोप्याशु भजद्भ्योऽपि न दीयते ॥
सा भुक्तिमुक्तिकामत्वाच्छुद्धां भक्तिमकुर्वताम् ।
हृदये सम्भवत्येषां कथं भागवती रतिः ॥
vimuktākhila-tarṣair yā muktir api vimṛgyate |
yā kṛṣṇenātigopyāśu bhajadbhyo’pi na dīyate ||
sā bhukti-mukti-kāmatvāc chuddhāṁ bhaktim akurvatām |
hṛdaye sambhavaty eṣāṁ kathaṁ bhāgavatī ratiḥ ||

“That which is sought even by the liberated who are completely free from all [extraneous] desires, which is highly confidential and [which is] not given by Kṛṣṇa quickly even to worshippers [of himself]—how can [that] rati for Bhagavān appear in the heart of those who do not perform pure bhakti on account of being possessed of desire for enjoyment or liberation?”
Commentary
hetum eva viśiṣya darśayati—vimuktety ādinā | bhukti-mukti-kāmatvāt kathaṁ sā ratiḥ sambhavet tasmād eva hetoḥ sādhana-gatam api doṣam āha—śuddhāṁ bhaktim akurvatām iti | śuddhāṁ jñāna-karmādy-amiśrām |
(Durgama-saṅgamanī-ṭīkā; Bhakti-sāra-pradarśinī-ṭīkā)
“He describes and shows the reason specifically: vimukta … [i.e., he states the next two verses]. On account of [a sādhaka’s] being possessed of desire for enjoyment or liberation, wow can that rati appear? [It cannot.] Therefore, for that reason specifically, he describes a fault also present in the sādhana [of a sādhaka]: ‘of those who do not engage in pure bhakti’ (śuddhāṁ bhaktim akurvatām) [i.e., he explains that rati does not manifest when sādhakas improperly perform sādhana by continuing to foster desire for objects other than bhakti, e.g., worldly enjoyment and mukti]. [The mention of] ‘Pure’ [here in this verse] means not mixed with jñāna, karma, and the like.”
