अतः पुम्भिर्द्विजश्रेष्ठा वर्णाश्रमविभागशः ।
स्वनुष्ठितस्य धर्मस्य संसिद्धिर्हरितोषणम् ॥

ataḥ pumbhir dvija-śreṣṭhā varṇāśrama-vibhāgaśaḥ |
svanuṣṭhitasya dharmasya saṁsiddhir hari-toṣaṇam ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 1.2.13)

“Therefore, O best of the twice-born, the highest accomplishment of dharma aptly performed by human beings in accord with the divisions of the varṇas and āśramas is the satisfaction of Hari.”

Commentary

sā caivaṁ durlabhā bhaktiḥ śrī-hari-toṣaṇe prayuktāt svābhāvika-dharmād api labhyate iti | tasmād dhari-toṣaṇam eva tasya parama-phalam ity āha—ata iti | svanuṣṭhitasya bahu-prayatnenācchidram upārjitasyeti tucche svargādi-phale tat-prayogo’tīvāyukta iti bhāvaḥ |
(Krama-sandarbha-ṭīkā; Bhakti Sandarbha: 8)

“This bhakti, in this way difficult to attain [i.e., as was explained in the previous verse], furthermore, is attainable even by [performance] of dharma suited to one’s disposition (svabhāva) [when that dharma is] enacted for the satisfaction of Śrī Hari. Thus, specifically the satisfaction of Hari is the ultimate result thereof [i.e., of the dharma that is suited to an individual’s disposition]. Thus, he says ataḥ … [i.e., he speaks this verse]. ‘Aptly performed’ (svanuṣṭhitasya) means that which has attained faultlessness by means of great effort. Thus, application thereof [i.e., making use of apt performance of one’s dharma] for the sake of [attaining] insignificant results, such as Svarga, is highly improper. This is the purport.”
