(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 4.31.21; cited in Bhakti Sandarbha: 301)

“The connoisseur of rasa, Hari, he to whom those who have no [worldly] wealth and whose wealth is the Self [i.e., the Ātmā, meaning, Hari himself] are dear, does not accept the worship of those of polluted intellect, who because of the intoxications of learning, wealth, family, and deeds, engage in wrong-doing in relation to sādhus who are without anything [i.e., free from any such intoxications and the pride and possessiveness that underlie them].”

(Excerpt from the Sārārtha-darśinī-ṭīkā)

“[The compound adhanātma-dhana-priyo means] He to whom those who have no wealth and whose wealth is the Self (Ātmā), meaning whose wealth is Bhagavān [i.e., Hari himself], are dear. Alternately, [it means] He for whom those who have no wealth, that is, who are possessionless and desireless, are his own wealths [i.e., treasures] and dear ones. Rasa-jña means he who knows the rasa of the prema of bhaktas who forsake affectionate possessiveness (mamatā) for wealth, sons, and so on, and foster affectionate possessiveness (mamatā) solely for me [i.e., Bhagavān]. He describes being of polluted intellect in the second half of the verse (śruta …). [Those of polluted intellect engage in] Wrong-doing, that is, defamation and so forth, [of sādhus] because of the intoxications of learning, wealth, family, deeds, such as [performing] sacrifices and so on.”
