सुखानुशयी रागः । दुःखानुशयी द्वेषः ।
sukhānuśayī rāgaḥ | duḥkhānuśayī dveṣaḥ |
(Yoga-sūtra: 2.7–8)
“Rāga [i.e., attachment] is that which closely follows pleasure. Dveṣa [i.e., aversion] is that which closely follows suffering.”
Commentary
sukhābhijñasya sukhānusmṛti-pūrvaḥ sukhe tat-sādhane vā yo gardhas tṛṣṇā lobhaḥ sa rāga iti | duḥkhābhijñasya duḥkhānusmṛti-pūrvo duḥkhe tat-sādhane vā yaḥ pratigho manyur jighāṁsā krodhaḥ, sa dveṣa iti |

“The desire, the thirst, [or] the longing, for pleasure (sukha), or a means to that, preceded by remembrance of pleasure, of one who has [past] experience of pleasure is [called] rāga. The resistance, the fury, the malice, [or] the anger, towards suffering (duḥkha), or a means to that, preceded by remembrance of suffering, of one who has [past] experience of suffering is [called] dveṣa.”
