नैवोद्विजे पर दुरत्ययवैतरण्या-
स्त्वद्वीर्यगायनमहामृतमग्नचित्तः ।
शोचे ततो विमुखचेतस इन्द्रियार्थ
मायासुखाय भरमुद्वहतो विमूढान् ॥

naivodvije para duratyaya-vaitaraṇyās
tvad-vīrya-gāyana-mahāmṛta-magna-cittaḥ |
śoce tato vimukha-cetasa indriyārtha-
māyā-sukhāya bharam udvahato vimūḍhān ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 7.9.43)

“Of mind absorbed in the great nectar
Of [songs sung by] the singers of your feats,
I am certainly not afraid,
O Supreme One,
Of the insurmountable Vaitaraṇī.
[Still,] I pity the fools,
Whose minds are averse to that [great nectar],
Bearing the burden [of worldly life]
For the sake of the illusory pleasure
Produced by objects of the senses.”

Commentary

tvad-vīryāṇāṁ ye gāyakās tat-priya-janāḥ tat-sambandhi yan mahāmṛtaṁ, tad-gāna-rūpam eva tatra magnaṁ cittaṁ yasya so’haṁ naivodvije | atra pūrvaṁ ‘trasto’smy aham’ ity-ādikaṁ yad uktaṁ tat khalu tad-bahirmukha-saṅgārocakatvena | samprati ‘naivodvije’ ity-ādikaṁ tat-kathāmṛta-mādhuryāviṣṭatvena madhye ca ‘naitan mana’ ity-ādikam atitṛṣṇayeti vivecanīyaṁ bhāvānāṁ vicitra-gatitvāt |

“‘I—he whose mind is absorbed in the great nectar the form of which is the singing of the singers of your feats, that is, of persons dear to you [i.e., your bhaktas]—am certainly not afraid [of the insurmountable Vaitaraṇī].’ In this regard, the earlier statement [of Prahlāda Mahārāja in SB 7.9.16,] ‘I am afraid of the havoc of the fierce, difficult to bear wheel of saṁsāra …,’ was [made] specifically on account of the distastefulness of the association of those who are oblivious (bahirmukha) of him [i.e., Bhagavān]. Now, [the statement in SB 7.9.43,] ‘I am certainly not afraid …,’ is to be considered [to have been made] because of [Prahlāda Mahārāja’s] being absorbed in the sweetness of the nectar of narrations about him [when that statement was made] and the earlier [statement in SB 7.9.39], ‘This mind does not take great pleasure in narrations about you …,’ is [to be considered to have been made by Prahlāda Mahārāja] out of exceedingly intense thirst [to relish the nectar of narrations about him] on account of the variegated flow of [various] bhāvas [in the hearts of Bhagavān’s bhaktas in the course of their ever-unfolding immersion in bhakti to Śrī Bhagavān].”

kiṁ ca, ahaṁ svārthas tu saṁsāra-taraṇaṁ naivārthaya ity āha—naiveti | he para, sarva-śreṣṭha, vaitaraṇyāḥ sakāśān nodvije | tatra hetuḥ—tvad-vīryeti |

‘Furthermore, I, for my own sake, however, certainly do not pray for deliverance from saṁsāra.’ Thus, he says naiva … [i.e., he speaks SB 7.9.43]. O Supreme One, O you who are the greatest of all, I am not afraid of the Vaitaraṇī. In this regard, the reason is that ‘I am of mind absorbed in the great nectar of the [songs sung by] singers of your feats.’”
