यो वक्ति न्यायरहितम् अन्यायेन शृणोति यः ।
तावुभौ नरकं घोरं व्रजतः कालमक्षयम् ॥
yo vakti nyāya-rahitam anyāyena śṛṇoti yaḥ |
tāv ubhau narakaṁ ghoraṁ vrajataḥ kālam akṣayam ||

“Both one who speaks devoid of rule [i.e., without adherence to śāstra] and one who listens devoid of rule [i.e., without adherence to śāstra] proceed to a dark hell for unlimited time.”
Commentary
parīkṣāṁ vinā guru-sevādiṁ vinā ca mantrasya kathane grahaṇe ca mahān anartha iti likhati—yo vaktīti | nyāyaḥ dvayor anyonya-parīkṣaṇa-pūrvaka-guru-sevādi-prakāras tad-rahitam |

“When a mantra is spoken and accepted without examination and without service and so forth to the guru, a severe anartha arises. Thus this verse is written. ‘Rule’ (nyāya) means the process of mutual examination and subsequent service and so forth to the guru. Without that [is the meaning of ‘devoid of rule’].”
