(Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā: 6.26)

“Restraining [i.e., withdrawing] the restless, unsteady mind from wherever it wanders, one should bring it under control within the self.”

Commentary

evam api rajo-guṇa-vaśād yadi manaḥ pracalet tarhi punaḥ pratyāhāreṇa vaśīkuryād ity āha yato yata iti | svabhāvataś cañcalaṁ dhāryamāṇam apy asthiraṁ mano yaṁ yaṁ viṣayaṁ prati nirgacchati, tatas tataḥ pratyāhṛtyātmany eva sthiraṁ kuryāt |
(Subodhinī-ṭīkā)

“In this way too, if the mind should become agitated under the control of the mode of passion (rajo-guṇa), then one should again control it through withdrawal (pratyāhāra). Thus, he [i.e., Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa] speaks this verse (yato yato …). One should withdraw the mind, which is by nature restless and unsteady even when directed, from whichever object it moves towards, and fix it upon the self alone.”

yadi ca prāktana-doṣodgama-vaśād rajo-guṇa-spṛṣṭaṁ manaś cañcalaṁ syāt, tadā punar yogam abhyased ity āha yato yata iti |
(Sārārtha-varṣiṇī-tīkā)

“If the mind, contacted by the mode of passion (rajo-guṇa), should become unsteady under the influence of emerging prior faults, then one should again practice yoga. Thus, he [i.e., Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa] speaks this verse (yato yato …).

yadi kadācit prāktana-sūkṣma-doṣān manaḥ pracalet tadā tat pratyāhared ity āha yata iti | yaṁ yaṁ viṣayaṁ prati mano nirgacchati, tatas tata etan mano niyamya pratyāhṛtyātmany eva niratiśaya-sukhatva-bhāvanayā vaśaṁ kuryāt |
(Gītā-bhūṣaṇa-ṭīkā)

“If the mind should sometimes become agitated by subtle, prior faults, then one should withdraw it [from wherever it wanders]. Thus, he [i.e., Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa] speaks this verse (yato yato …). One should restrain, that is, withdraw, the mind from whatever object it moves towards and bring it under control through contemplation of the superlative happiness [found] within the self alone.”
