“[Śrī Kāśī Miśra to Śrīman Mahāprabhu:] The result of worship of you is the wealth of prema for you. A person who worships you for the sake of objects of the senses (viṣaya) is a fool. … He is a pure bhakta who worships you for your sake and is an endurer of the experience of his own happiness and suffering [i.e., he does not worship you for the sake of attaining personal happiness or removing personal suffering]. He desires [only] your grace and worships [you] at every moment. Your feet reach him before long.”

Commentary

Śrī Rādhāgovinda Nātha comments in his Gaura-kṛpā-taraṅginī: “He [i.e., Śrī Kāśī Miśra] states the characteristics of a pure bhakta in this payāra [i.e., CC 3.9.75]. In regard to ‘the experience of his own happiness and suffering …,’ a jīva’s happiness and suffering arise as a result of a jīva’s own karma. A genuine bhakta does not worship Bhagavān for the sake his own happiness or for the sake of ceasing his own suffering; he engages in worship of Bhagavān solely for the sake of prīti for Bhagavān [i.e., for the pleasure of Bhagavān, or, alt., for the sake of attaining love for Bhagavān], and when [his own] suffering or happiness arises [in the course of his life], he endures them with an undisturbed mind.”

Immediately following these statements, Śrī Kāśī Miśra cites the highly esteemed verse of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (10.14.8) tat te’nukampāṁ susamīkṣamāṇo …, which indicates that the characteristics given in the aforecited payāras convey the gist of the teaching within this statement of Śrī Brahmā in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam.
