“Now, [offering] obeisance [shall be described]: Then, one should prostrate with eight limbs and show the mudrā thereof. With every prostration, one should also declare, ‘Be pleased, O Bhagavān!’ This is stated by Śrī Bhagavān in the Eleventh [Canto, i.e., SB 11.27.45], ‘One should [offer] praise with various stavas and stotras, ancient and vernacular, [entreat Bhagavān,] ‘Be pleased, O Bhagavān,’ and offer obeisance like a stick.”

Commentary

stava-stotrāṇāṁ bhedaṁ darśayati—paurāṇaiḥ prākṛtair apīti |
(Bhāvārtha-dīpikā)

“He shows a distinction among stavas and stotras: ‘ancient and vernacular’ (paurāṇaiḥ prākṛtair api) [i.e., a stotra is an ancient hymn of praise and a stava is a modern, vernacular hymn of praise].”

prākṛtair arvācīnair loka-bhāṣā-nibaddhair iti vā |
(Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā)

Prākṛtaiḥ means modern, or, composed in the language of the people [i.e., vernacular].”

stava-stotrayor ārṣa-pauruṣatvena bhedaḥ kalpyaḥ | prasīda bhagavann iti vijñāpayan daṇḍavad bhūmau patan vandeta |
(Sārārtha-darśinī-ṭīkā)

“A distinction between stavas and stotras is to be conceived on account of [their] being authored by ṛṣis and being authored by people [i.e., a stotra is a hymn of praise authored by a ṛṣi, whereas a stava is a hymn of praise composed by a person in general]. Entreating [Bhagavān], ‘Be pleased, O Bhagavān,’ one should offering obeisance, falling on the ground like a stick.”

stotra-stavayor abhede’py avāntara-bhedaḥ pūrva-prasiddhatva-svakṛtatvābhyāṁ jñeyaḥ |
(Bhakti-sāra-pradarśinī-ṭīkā on Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 1.2.159)

“Although there is no difference between a stotra and a stava, a minor difference [between them] is to be understood on account of [a stotra’s] being previously composed [by someone else] and [a stava’s] being self-authored.”
