वरं वरय भद्रं ते वरेशं माभिवाञ्छितम् ।
ब्रह्मञ्छ्रेय:परिश्राम: पुंसां मद्दर्शनावधि: ॥

varaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te vareśaṁ mābhivāñchitam |
brahmañ chreyaḥ-pariśrāmaḥ puṁso mad-darśanāvadhiḥ ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 2.9.21)

[Bhagavān:] “O Brahmā! Auspiciousness to you. Request your desired benediction from me, the master [i.e., capable bestower] of [all] benedictions, as a person’s endeavor for well-being culminates in darśana of me.”

Commentary

śreyasāṁ phalānāṁ pariśrāmaḥ pariśramaḥ sādhana-prayāsaḥ mama darśanam avadhir yasya sa tathā | ato’dhikaṁ tu punaḥ phalaṁ nāstīty arthaḥ |
(Excerpt from the Bhāvārtha-dīpikā)

“‘Endeavor for well-being’ (śreyaḥ-pariśrāmaḥ), that is, effort in sādhana, culminates in my darśana. There is no further, superior attainment beyond this. This is the meaning.”

mad-darśanāvadhir iti mad-darśanasyāntarbhūta-sarva-phalatvād iti bhāvaḥ |
(Krama-sandarbha-ṭīkā)

“[A person’s endeavor for well-being] Culminates in darśana of me because of all attainments being contained in darśana of me. This is the purport.”

mā mām | vāñchitaṁ vastu vṛṇu, yācasveti yāvat | śreyaḥ-pariśrāmaḥ śreyasāṁ śravaṇādi-sādhanānāṁ pariśrāmaḥ phalārthakaḥ prayāso mad-darśanāvadhir eva—mad-darśanād anyasya phalasya mad-bhaktair agrāhyatvād iti bhāvaḥ |
(Sārārtha-darśinī-ṭīkā)

“Request your desired object from me, that is more specifically, pray for it. ‘Endeavor for well-being’ (śreyaḥ-pariśrāmaḥ), that is, the purposeful effort of the sādhanas of hearing and so forth, culminates only in darśana of me because of attainments other than darśana of me being unacceptable to my bhaktas. This is the purport.”
