इन्द्रियाणि मनः प्राण आत्मा धर्मो धृतिर्मतिः ।
ह्रीः श्रीस्तेजः स्मृतिः सत्यं यस्य नश्यन्ति जन्मना ॥
indriyāṇi manaḥ prāṇa ātmā dharmo dhṛtir matiḥ |
hrīḥ śrīs tejaḥ smṛtiḥ satyaṁ yasya naśyanti janmanā ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 7.10.8)
“By the appearance of which [i.e., of desire], the senses, the mind, the vital air, the body, dharma, composure, intelligence, modesty, beauty, strength, remembrance, and truthfulness are lost.”
Commentary
nanu kāmotpattau satyāṁ ko doṣas tatrāha—indriyādīni yasya janmanā naśyanti | ātmā dehaḥ |
(Bhāvārtha-dīpikā)
“[A question is raised:] ‘Well, when the emergence of desire occurs, what fault is there?’ To that, he [i.e., Prahlāda Mahārāja] says that the senses and so forth are lost by the appearance of which [i.e., of desire]. [The word] Ātmā refers to the body.”
yasya kāmasya indriyādīnāṁ tan-mādhuryāgrahaṇam eva kupatha-gāmitā saiva nāśaḥ |
(Sārārtha-darśinī-ṭīkā)
“The senses and so forth’s veritable non-engagement with his [i.e., Bhagavān’s] sweetness (mādhurya) [by the appearance] of which, that is, [by the appearance] of desire, occurs. That movement down the wrong path itself is the loss.”
