tasmād bhavantam anavadyam ananta-pāraṁ

तस्माद्भवन्तमनवद्यमनन्तपारं
सर्वज्ञमीश्वरमकुण्ठविकुण्ठधिष्ण्यम् ।
निर्विण्णधीरहमु हे वृजिनाभितप्तो
नारायणं नरसखं शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥

tasmād bhavantam anavadyam ananta-pāraṁ
sarva-jñam īśvaram akuṇṭha-vikuṇṭha-dhiṣṇyam |
nirviṇṇa-dhīr aham u he vṛjinābhitapto
nārāyaṇaṁ nara-sakhaṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye ||

“[Uddhava to Kṛṣṇa:] U he [i.e., O Bhagavān]! Therefore I, of despondent mind and [thus] stricken with distress, take shelter in you, the flawless, endless and boundless, all-knowing Capable One, you whose abode is unchecked Vaikuṇṭha, you who are the refuge of [all] beings [including even Mahāviṣṇu], and [still so also who are] the friend of [all] human beings [i.e., you descend to uplift them all].”

Commentary

tasmād bhavantam evāhaṁ prapadye | tatra kaścit sarva-guṇa-maṇḍito’pi durācāro bhavatīti tad vyāvṛtty-artham āha—anavadyam | kaścit sevitaḥ phala-kāle vinaśyatīti tad vyāvṛtty-artham āha—ananta-pāraṁ na vidyate’ntaḥ kālato, na ca pāraṁ deśataś ca yasya tam | kaścid akṛtajño bhavati, na ca tvam ity āha—sarvajñam | kaścid asamartho rakṣaṇe na ca tvam ity āha—īśvaram | kaścid abhadrāspadaḥ, na ca tvam ity āha—kālādibhir akuṇṭho vikuṇṭha-loko dhiṣṇyaṁ sthānaṁ yasya tam | u he bhagavan ! nirvede hetuḥ vṛjinair duḥkhair abhitaptaḥ | … paramaṁ sarvotkarṣam āha—nārāyaṇaṁ nārasya mahat-sraṣṭr-ādi-puruṣa-samūhasyāpi paramāśrayam | parama-kṛpālutvam āha—nara-sakhaṁ nara-mātrānugrahāyāvatīrṇam ity arthaḥ |

“Therefore, I take shelter only in you. In this regard, although someone may be adorned with all qualities, they may be of improper behavior. To thus exclude this [i.e., to indicate that this is not the case with Bhagavān], it is said, ’[you are] flawless [in conduct].’ Someone may be served [in order to receive a reward from them] but perish at the time of [granting] the result [i.e., before granting it]. To thus exclude this [from even being possible], it is said, ’you are endless and boundless, that is, you have no end in time and and no bound in space.’ Someone may be ungrateful [of service rendered to them, or, lit., “unaware of what has been done”], but you are not. Thus it is said, ‘[you are] all-knowing.’ Someone may be incapable of protecting [i.e., of protecting others, and in particular, those engaged in their service], but you are not. Thus it is said, ‘[you are] capable.’ Someone may have an inauspicious abode, but you do not. Thus it said, ‘you whose abode is Vaikuṇṭha, unchecked by time and so forth.’ ‘U he’ means, ’O Bhagavān!’ … Regarding his supreme excellence above all, it is said, ‘Nārāyaṇam: you who are the supreme refuge of all beings beginning even with the great emanator [i.e., Mahāviṣṇu].’ Regarding his supreme graciousness, it is said, ‘Nara-sakham: you have descended to grace every human being.’ This is the meaning.”
