Five verses in prayer for the shelter of Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa

Excerpted from Padma Purāṇa (5.82.37–47) and Sanat-kumāra-saṁhitā (124–134) with five preceding verses from the original text. The pañcakam itself is also cited in Sādhanāmṛta-candrikā (2.28).

आश्रितश्चातकीं वृत्तिं देहपातावधि द्विज ।
द्वयस्यार्थं भावयता स्थेयमित्येव मे मतिः ॥

āśritaś cātakīṁ vṛttiṁ deha-pātāvadhi dvija |
dvayasyārthaṁ bhāvayatā stheyam ity eva me matiḥ ||

[Śrī Sadāśiva to Śrī Nārada:] O twice-born, adopting the way of a cātakī until the fall [i.e., death] of the body out of desire for the sake of the two [i.e., one’s Iṣṭa-devas, Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa], one should be fixed [in the conviction], ‘This alone [i.e., the attitude of accepting one’s sustenance exclusively from one source like a cātakī] is my mentality.’

सरःसमुद्रनद्यादीन्विहाय चातकी यथा ।
त्र्षिति म्रियते वापि याचते वा पयोधरात् ॥
एवमेव प्रयत्नेन साधनानि परित्यजन् ।
स्वेष्टदेवौ सदा भाव्यौ गतिस्तौ मे भवेदिति ॥

saraḥ-samudra-nady-ādīn vihāya cātakī yathā |
trṣiti mriyate vāpi yācate vā payodharāt ||
evam eva prayatnena sādhanāni parityajan |
sveṣṭa-devau sadā bhāvyau gatis tau me bhaved iti ||

As a cātakī rejects lakes, oceans, rivers, and so forth when it is thirsty and either dies or begs [for water] from a cloud, so exactly, with great care, forsaking [all other] sādhanas, one’s Iṣṭa-devas are to be meditated upon always [with the prayer], ‘May you two be my shelter.’

स्वेष्टदेवतदीयानां गुरोरपि विशेषतः ।
आनुकूल्ये सदा स्थेयं प्रातिकूल्यं विवर्जयेत् ॥

sveṣṭa-deva-tadīyānāṁ guror api viśeṣataḥ |
ānukūlye sadā stheyaṁ prātikūlyaṁ vivarjayet ||

One should always be fixed in favorability (ānukūlya) to [alt., upon that which is favorable with regard to] one’s Iṣṭa-devas, those who are their own [i.e., their bhaktas], and the guru in particular, and one should completely reject the unfavorable.

सकृत्प्रपन्नरक्षादिकल्यानुगुणतां तयोः ।
विचिन्त्य विश्वसयेदेतौ मामवश्यमविष्यतः ॥

sakṛt-prapanna-rakṣādi-kalyānuguṇatāṁ tayoḥ |
vicintya viśvasayed etau mām avaśyam aviṣyataḥ ||

Meditating on their [i.e., Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa’s] masterful congeniality in protecting those who have taken shelter [in them just] once and so forth [i.e., and the numerous other compelling expressions their congeniality towards their bhaktas], one should foster the conviction, ‘They will certainly protect me’ [and pray as follows].

संसारसागरान्नाथौ पुत्रमित्रगृहाकुलात् ।
गोप्तारौ मे युवामेव प्रपन्नभयभञ्जनौ ॥

saṁsāra-sāgarān nāthau putra-mitra-gṛhākulāt |
goptārau me yuvām eva prapanna-bhaya-bhañjanau ||

‘O Protectors from the ocean of saṁsāra, from the state of being engrossed in sons, friends, and household life! You two alone are my Guardians, O you who are dispellers of fear from those who have taken shelter [in you]!

योऽहं ममास्ति यत्किञ्चिदिह लोके परत्र च ।
तत्सर्वं भवतोरद्य चरणेषु मयार्पितम् ॥

yo’haṁ mamāsti yat kiñcid iha loke paratra ca |
tat sarvaṁ bhavator adya caraṇeṣu mayārpitam ||

‘Who I am, and whatever is mine in this world and the next—today all of that is offered by me at your feet.

अहमप्यपराधानामालयस्त्यक्तसाधनः ।
अगतिश्च ततो नाथौ भवन्तौ मे भवेद्गतिः ॥

aham apy aparādhānām ālayas tyakta-sādhanaḥ |
agatiś ca tato nāthau bhavantau me bhaved gatiḥ ||

‘I am a storehouse of offenses. I have forsaken sādhanas and am thus shelterless. O Protectors! [Still,] May you two be my shelter.

तवास्मि राधिकानाथ कर्मणा मनसा गिरा ।
कृष्णकान्ते तवैवास्मि युवामेव गतिर्मम ॥

tavāsmi rādhikā-nātha karmaṇā manasā girā |
kṛṣṇa-kānte tavaivāsmi yuvām eva gatir mama ||

‘I am yours, O Lord of Rādhikā, in deed, mind, and speech. O Beloved of Kṛṣṇa, I am yours alone. You two alone are my shelter.

शरणं वां प्रपन्नोऽस्मि करुणानिकराकरौ ।
प्रसादं कुरुतं दास्यं मयि दुष्टेऽपराधिनि ॥

śaraṇaṁ vāṁ prapanno’smi karuṇā-nikarākarau |
prasādaṁ kurutaṁ dāsyaṁ mayi duṣṭe’parādhini ||

‘I have taken shelter in you both, O Treasure-houses of compassion! Please bestow the grace of [your] servitude upon I who am sinful and offensive.’

इत्येवं जपतां नित्यं गातव्यं पद्यपञ्चकम् ।
अचिरादेव तद्दास्यमिच्छतां मुनिसत्तम ॥

ity evaṁ japatāṁ nityaṁ gātavyaṁ padya-pañcakam |
acirād eva tad-dāsyam icchatāṁ muni-sattama ||

O best of the sages, one should thus daily chant this group of five verses [beginning with saṁsāra-sāgarān Nātha, ‘O Protectors from the ocean of saṁsāra …’], which are most worthy of being sung, and desire to attain their [i.e., Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa’s] servitude verily without delay.
