एवं सञ्जातवैराग्यो विज्ञानालोक आत्मनि ।
विचरामि महीमेतां मुक्तसङ्गोऽनहङ्कृतः ॥
evaṁ sañjāta-vairāgyo vijñānāloka ātmani |
vicarāmi mahīm etāṁ mukta-saṅgo’nahaṅkṛtaḥ ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.9.30)
“Thus endowed with non-attachment (vairāgya) and the light of refined knowledge in regard to the Self, I roam about this earth freed from attachment and without egotism.”
Commentary
Śrī Śrīdhara Svāmīpāda explains that the avadhūta makes this statement to the king after having described all the lessons he learned from the twenty-four features of the environment he came to regard as his gurus. In this way “thus” (evaṁ) refers to his having been instructed by all these gurus (evaṁ bahubhyo gurubhyaḥ śikṣitena viśiṣṭaṁ jñānam evālokaḥ pradīpo yasya saḥ). Śrī Svāmīpāda then reads the rest of the verse in this way, “Thus endowed with non-attachment (vairāgya) and the light of refined knowledge, I roam about this earth [verily situated] in the self (ātmani sthita eva), freed from attachment, and without egotism.” Śrī Cakravartīpāda, alternately, reads the statement as follows, “Thus endowed with non-attachment (vairāgya) and the light of refined knowledge in regard to the Self, that is, vision the focus of which is unmeditated experience of the Paramātmā (Ātmani Paramātmani yad vijñānam aparokṣānubhavas tatraivāloka dṛṣṭi-tātparyaṁ yasya saḥ), I roam about this earth freed from attachment and without egotism.”
