चेत्कृष्णचन्द्रस्य महावतार-
स्तादृग्निजप्रेमवितानकारी ।
स्याद्वा कदाचिद्यदि राधिकायाः
प्रेमानुभूतिं तदुपैत्यथापि ॥

cet kṛṣṇacandrasya mahāvatāras
tādṛg-nija-prema-vitāna-kārī |
syād vā kadācid yadi rādhikāyāḥ
premānubhūtiṁ tad upaity athāpi ||
(Bṛhad Bhāgavatāmṛta: 2.5.234)

“If a great avatāra of Kṛṣṇacandra who is a distributor of such prema for himself, or, if [such a great avatāra] of Rādhikā, should ever come about, then too one would attain experience of that prema.”

Commentary

nanu sadā sarvair janaiḥ sā kila na dṛśyate tarhi mādṛśair adhunā kathaṁ jñeyaḥ? yad vā saivaikā jagati tādṛśa-premavatī, anyo’pi vā kaścit kadācit syāt, anyathā anyasya tatra nairāśyāpatteḥ | tatrāha—ced iti | tādṛśa-śrī-rādhā-prema-sadṛśasya ukta-sadṛśasya vā nija-sva-kṛṣṇacandra-viṣayakasya premṇo vitāno vistāras tat-kārī | vā-śabdaḥ pakṣāntare, pūrvato’py uttara-pakṣasya vaiśiṣṭyāpekṣayā yadi vā rādhikāyā mahān avatāraḥ syāt, tathāpi tad-ukta-lakṣaṇaṁ prema anubhūtim anubhavam upaiti prāpnoti |

“[A question is raised:] ‘Well, she [i.e., Bhagavatī Rādhikā] is certainly not visible to all people. So, how now shall that [prema] become knowable to people like me?’ Alternately, [this objection is raised:] ‘Verily she alone is possessed of such prema in the world yet someone else should also become so at some time because of the occurrence of hopelessness for others in that regard otherwise [i.e., if it is not the case that anyone else can some day also attain such prema].’ To this he says cet … [i.e., Nārada speaks this verse]. [‘A distributor of such prema for himself (tādṛg-nija-prema-vitāna-kārī) means] One who does (kārī) that, meaning, distribution (vitāna), of prema the object of which is himself (nija), Kṛṣṇacandra, which is such (tādṛśa), meaning, [which is] akin to the prema of Śrī Rādhā, or, akin to the [afore-] stated [prema of the ladies of Vraja mentioned in BB 2.5.232]. The word ‘or’ () is in the sense of another side [i.e., a different point of view]. Out of regard for the superiority of the latter view even in comparison to the former, [it is then said] if alternately a great avatāra of Rādhikā should come about, then too one would attain (upaiti) experience (anubhūtim) of that prema of the [afore-] stated characteristics [i.e., prema akin to that of the ladies of Vraja and Bhagavatī Rādhikā herself].”
