अङ्गप्रत्यान्गकानां यः सन्निवेशो यथोचितम् ।
सुश्लिष्टसन्धिबन्धः स्यात्तत्सौन्दर्यमितीर्यते ॥

aṅga-pratyāngakānāṁ yaḥ sanniveśo yathocitam |
suśliṣṭa-sandhi-bandhaḥ syāt tat saundaryam itīryate ||
(Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi: 10.31)

“Formation as is felicitous of the parts and sub-parts [of the body] which shall be that wherein the unions with the joints are well-set is called beauty (saundarya).”

Commentary

aṅgānāṁ bāhv-ādīnāṁ pratyaṅgānāṁ pragaṇḍa-prakoṣṭha-maṇibandhādīnāṁ yathocitaṁ sthaulya-kārśya-vartulatvādikaṁ yatra yatra yad yad ucitaṁ bhavati tad anatikramya sanniveśaḥ suśliṣṭaḥ yathocitaṁ māṁsalatvenaikyam āptaḥ sandhīnāṁ kaphoṇy-ādīnāṁ bandho yasmin saḥ |
(Ānanda-candrikā-ṭīkā)

“Formation (sanniveśaḥ) of the parts (aṅgas), such as the arms, and the sub-parts (pratyaṅgas), such as upper arms, forearms, and wrists, as is felicitous (yathocitam), that is, not exceeding the appropriate thickness, thinness, curvature, and so on wherever these are appropriate, which shall be that wherein the unions (bandhas) with the joints (sandhis), such as the elbow, are well-fitted (suśliṣṭa), that is, felicitous, meaning, endowed with an evenness of fleshiness [is called beauty (saundarya)].”
