युक्तास्य स्फूर्तिमात्रेण निर्विशेषेण केनचित् ।
हृन्मीलनात्पुरोऽवस्था निद्रा भक्तेषु कथ्यते ॥

yuktāsya sphūrti-mātreṇa nirviśeṣeṇa kenacit |
hṛn-mīlanāt puro’vasthā nidrā bhakteṣu kathyate ||

“The state, prior to the shutting [down] of the mind (hṛt) [i.e., the state prior to the state of an absence of external functions (bahir-vṛtty-abhāva) in the citta], endowed only with some unspecific manifestation (sphūrti) of him [i.e., Śrī Kṛṣṇa] is called nidrā (sleep) in the case of bhaktas.”

Commentary

nanu pūrvaṁ citta-mīlanaṁ nidrety uktaṁ, sā ca tamo-guṇena citta-vṛtti-rūpaiva prasiddhā, sā ca parama-bhaktānāṁ na sambhavati, guṇātīta-cittatvāt | tarhi kena tad-āvṛtir iyaṁ nidrā ? tatrāha—yukteti | asya śrī-kṛṣṇasya uttama-bhaktānāṁ bhagavat-samādhi-rūpaiva nidrā, na tu prākṛtī yujyata iti bhāvaḥ, guṇātīta-bhāvatvāt | yathoktaṁ gāruḍe—jāgrat-svapna-susupteṣu yoga-sthasya ca yoginaḥ | yā kācin manaso vṛttiḥ sā bhaved acyutāśrayaḥ || iti | ata eva śrī-kṛṣṇasya sphūrti-mayatvād dhṛn-mīlanāt puro’vasthaiva nidrocyate, na tu hṛn-mīlana-mātram | yat tu pūrvaṁ, citta-mīlanaṁ nidrā ity uktaṁ tat khalv āpātata eva bodhayatīti bhāvaḥ |

“[A question is raised:] ‘Well, previously [in BRS 2.4.171] it was said that sleep (nidrā) is the shutting [down] of the mind, and that is well known to simply be, in form, a function of the mind (citta-vṛtti) under the influence of the mode of ignorance (tamo-guṇa). That, furthermore, is not possible for exalted bhaktas because of their minds (cittas) being beyond the [influence of the] guṇas. So, why does this covering thereof [i.e., of the citta], [namely,] sleep, occur? To this [question], the author speaks this verse (yuktāsya …). The sleep of the highest (uttama) bhaktas of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is, in form, only samādhi upon Bhagavān. It is not, rather, to be thought of as material (prākṛtī), because of its being a state beyond the guṇas. This is the purport, as stated in Garuḍa Purāṇa: ‘In wakefulness, dreams, and deep sleep, any function (vṛtti) in the mind of a yogī situated in yoga shall be sheltered in Acyuta.’ Therefore, the state prior to the shutting [down] of the mind, because of [that state’s] being constituted of a manifestation (sphūrti) of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is called sleep (nidrā) [in the case of uttama-bhaktas], and not, rather, simply the shutting [down] of the mind. The previous statement [in BRS 2.4.171], ‘Sleep (nidrā) is the shutting [down] of the mind’ just gives quick [i.e., a provisional] understanding [which is to be refined in accordance with the import of the present verse]. This is the purport.”
