तं नः समादिशोपायं येन ते चरणाब्जयोः ।
स्मृतिर्यथा न विरमेदपि संसरतामिह ॥
tan naḥ samādiśopāyaṁ yena te caraṇābjayoḥ |
smṛtir yathā na viramed api saṁsaratām iha ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 10.73.15)
“[Kings pray to Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa:] Please indicate aptly that means by which remembrance of your lotus feet shall not cease even for us, who are transmigrating here.”
Commentary
nanu tarhi sāyujya-muktir dīyate gṛhyatāṁ tatra nahi nahīty āhuḥ—tam iti | tam upāyaṁ samyaktayā grahītuṁ kartuṁ ca śakyatvena ādiśa yena smṛtir na viramet iha vividha-yonau saṁsaratām apīti na saṁsāra-bhaṅge kāmanā kintv atilobhyāyāṁ prema-bhaktāv apy atidainyodayenaiva na kāmanā nāpi tad-aṅga-bhūtāyāṁ smṛtāv api, kintu tasyā upāya eva, tatrāpi dehīty aprayujya samādiśaty anenāpi sākṣāt tatrāpīti bhakty-adhikārocitānāṁ niṣkāmatva-dainya-vinayādīnāṁ paramāvadhir eva darśitaḥ |

“[Śrī Kṛṣṇa says,] ‘Well, then I grant [you all] sāyujya-mukti. Accept [that].’ To this, they say, ‘Certainly not, certainly not’: tan naḥ … [i.e., they speak this verse]. [The kings say,] Please indicate aptly, that is, with possibility of being accepted and performed [by us], that means by which remembrance [of you] shall not cease even for we who are transmigrating here, that is, in the midst of various births. Thus, there is no desire [on the part of the kings] for the termination of [their] saṁsāra, nor desire even for prema-bhakti, which is most intensely desirable (atilobhya), nor even for remembrance [of Śrī Bhagavān] that is integral to that [i.e., to prema-bhakti] specifically because of an upwelling of intense humility (atidainya) [on the part of the kings], but [there is, rather, desire on their part] only for the means to that [i.e., to remembrance of Śrī Bhagavān that constituted of prema-bhakti for Śrī Bhagavān]. Therein, furthermore, not employing [the expression], ‘Please grant [us that],’ [they say,] ‘Please indicate aptly’ (samādiśa) [that to us]. Even by this [use of language on their part] even directly in regard to that [i.e., in regard to that means they seek to be taught by which they can achieve remembrance of Śrī Bhagavān’s lotus feet that shall not cease even in the midst of their lives in saṁsāra], specifically the apogee of desirelessness (niṣkāmatva), humility (dainya), propriety (vinaya), and so forth befitting those possessed of eligibility (adhikāra) for bhakti is shown.”
