Commentary
artha-nirdhāraṇaṁ matis tad eva nirṇayaḥ | tasya kāraṇasya vicāras tu vivekaḥ |
(Durgama-saṅgamanī-tīkā on Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 2.4.194)
“[‘Discrimination’ (viveka) and ‘determination’ (nirṇaya) are both included in ‘understanding’ (mati) because] Understanding (mati) is ascertainment of an object, and ‘determination’ (nirṇaya) is that itself [i.e., it is the same thing], and ‘discrimination’ (viveka) is deliberation (vicāra), its [i.e., mati’s] cause [i.e., the cause of determining the nature of an object].”
