प्राणैर्वियुक्ता न भवन्ति यावत्
तावद्विनोदं करुण त्यजैतम् ।
कृष्णान्यथा गोष्ठजनैकबन्धो
गन्तासि शोकं मृदुलस्वभावः ॥
prāṇair viyuktā na bhavanti yāvat
tāvad vinodaṁ karuṇa tyajaitam |
kṛṣṇānyathā goṣṭha-janaika-bandho
gantāsi śokaṁ mṛdula-svabhāvaḥ ||

“[Baladeva appeals to Kṛṣṇa lying motionless in the coils of Kāliya:] Before they become deprived of their prāṇas,
O Compassionate One,
Stop this play.
Otherwise,
O Kṛṣṇa,
O you whose only kinsmen are the people of the cowherd community,
You who are of tender disposition
Will undergo sorrow.”
Commentary
he karuṇa! parama-kāruṇika! yad vā, he mūrta-karuṇa-rasa! etaṁ ceṣṭā-rāhityādi-rūpaṁ vinodaṁ kautukaṁ tyaja | he kṛṣṇa! anyathā śīghraitad-vinodātyāgena śokaṁ gantāsi prāpsyasi | yato mṛdulaḥ parama-duḥkha-sahanāsamarthaḥ svabhāvo yasya saḥ | kiṁ ca, goṣṭha-janā eva eke mukhyā ananyā vā bandhavo yasya, tasya sambodhanam | ata eṣāṁ śoka-duḥkhaṁ kadācid api soḍhuṁ na śakṣyasīty arthaḥ |

“O Compassionate One” (Karuṇa), that is, “O Supremely Compassionate One,” or, “O you who are the rasa of compassion embodied,” stop this play (vinodam) in the form of inaction and so on [i.e., stop creating the impression in the minds of everyone here in Vraja that you are in danger of being killed by Kāliya since seeing this the people of Vraja are themselves now on the verge of death from the distress they feel at your predicament as a result of the profound intensity of their loving attachment to you]. O Kṛṣṇa! Otherwise, by not quickly stopping this play, you will undergo (gantāsi) sorrow since you are he whose disposition is tender, that is, incapable of tolerance of severe suffering. Moreover, there is [then] the address of him, ‘O you whose only (eke), or primary, kinsmen are the people of the cowherd community!’ [The implication is] Therefore you will not be able to tolerate their sorrow and suffering for even a moment. This is the meaning [i.e., since you hold the people of Vraja most dear as your very own kinsmen, you will not be able to tolerate the sorrow and suffering on their part that will ensure if you do not immediately stop this play of acting as though you are in danger of being killed by Kāliya].”
