यो न हृष्यति न द्वेष्टि न शोचति न काङ्‍क्षति ।
श‍ुभाश‍ुभपरित्यागी भक्तिमान्यः स मे प्रियः ॥

yo na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati |
śubhāśubha-parityāgī bhaktimān yaḥ sa me priyaḥ ||
(Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā: 12.17)

“One who does not become elated, does not become hostile, does not lament, and does not hanker, and who is a relinquisher of the auspicious and inauspicious is dear to me.”

Commentary

kiṁ ca ya iti | priyaṁ prāpya yo na hṛṣyati, apriyaṁ prāpya yo na dveṣṭi, iṣṭārtha-nāśe sati yo na śocati, aprāptam arthaṁ yo na kāṅkṣati, śubhāśubhe puṇya-pāpe parityaktuṁ śīlaṁ yasya saḥ, evambhūto bhūtvā yo mad-bhaktimān sa me priyaḥ | (Subodhinī-ṭikā)

“Furthermore, yaḥ … [i.e., this verse is stated]. One who does not become elated upon attaining that which is pleasing, who does not become hostile upon attaining that which is displeasing, who does not lament when a desired object is lost, who does not hanker for an unattained object, and whose disposition is to relinquish the auspicious and the inauspicious, that is, merit (puṇya) and sin (pāpa)—one possessed of bhakti to me who is of such nature—he is dear to me.”

yaḥ priyaṁ putra-śiṣyādi prāpya na hṛṣyati, apriyaṁ tat prāpya tatra na dveṣṭi, priye tasmin vinaṣṭe na śocati, aprāptam tan nākāṅkṣati, śubhaṁ puṇyam aśubhaṁ pāpaṁ tad-ubhayaṁ pratibandhakatva-sāmyāt parityaktuṁ śīlaṁ yasya saḥ |
(Gītā-bhūṣaṇa-ṭīkā)

“One who does not become elated upon attaining that which is pleasing, such as a son or disciple, does not become hostile upon attain that which is displeasing, does not lament when that which is pleasing is lost, does not hanker for that which is unattained, and whose disposition is to relinquish the auspicious, that is, merit (puṇya), and the inauspicious, that is, and sin (pāpa), because of the quality in them both of being obstructions [to bhakti is dear to me].”
