(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 10.32.13)

“They whose heartache was cast away by the delight of his darśana, and who reached the end [i.e., complete fulfillment] of their desires like the Śrutis, fashioned a seat for their own bandhu with their own upper garments which were smeared with the kumkum from their breasts.”

Commentary

“For their own bandhu” (ātma-bandhave) means, according the Vaiṣṇava-toṣaṇī-ṭīkā, for he who was their bandhu by virtue of the bhāva of his being their own and their friend (ātmano bandhave; ātmīyatvena mitratvena ca bhāvād ity arthaḥ). According the Bṛhad Vaiṣṇava-toṣaṇī-ṭīkā, “for their own bandhu” (ātma-bandhave) means for he who is beloved [to them] even more than themselves, that is, he who is a crore times more dear than the self (ātmabhyo’pi bandhuḥ preyān tasmai ātma-koṭi-preṣṭhāyety arthaḥ). Alternately, “for their own bandhu” (ātma-bandhave) means for their supreme dearmost, he who is dear [to them] more so than even themselves because of their being captivated by an abundance of prema [for him] (yad vā, ātmano’pi sakāśāt bandhuḥ priyaḥ tasmai parama-priyatamāya prema-bhara-vaivaśyād ity arthaḥ).
