सदा द्रोहपरो यस्तु सज्जनानां महीतले ।
जायते पावनो धन्यो हरेर्नामानुकीर्तनात् ॥

sadā droha-paro yas tu saj-janānāṁ mahī-tale |
jāyate pāvano dhanyo harer nāmānukīrtanāt ||

“[Even] One who is constantly malicious towards virtuous people becomes purified [alt., purifying] and fortunate as a result of continuous chanting of Hari’s name.”

Commentary

adhunā niṣprāyaścitto bhagavad-akṣamyo bhogaika-nāśyo mahān-aparādho’pi nāma-māhātmyato’payātīty āha—sadeti | nāmno’nu nirantaraṁ kīrtanāt dhanyaḥ pāvanaḥ parama-śuddha ity arthaḥ | yad vā na kevalaṁ svayam eva tataḥ pavitro bhaved iti kintu parān api pāvayati prema-lakṣaṇa-bhagavad-bhakti-dhana-yogyaś ca bhavatīti | yadyapi nāmāparādha-stotrādau ‘satāṁ nindā nāmnaḥ paramam aparādhaṁ vitanute’ ity ādinā nindāpi nāmāparādha uktaḥ, kim uta sadā droha-parateti | ataḥ parama-mahad-aparādhād asmān mahānaraka-pāta eva ‘nāmno’pi sarva-suhṛdo hy aparādhāt pataty adhaḥ’ ity ādibhir abhihitaḥ tathāpi tatraiva ‘nāmāparādha-yuktānāṁ nāmāny eva haranty agham’ ity ādy-ukter nāma-parāṇāṁ na ko’pi doṣo ghaṭate, pratyuta bhakti-viśeṣa evodetīti | ataḥ samyag evoktam—jāyate pāvano dhanyaḥ iti |

“Now, [it is explained that] even a severe offense which is non-atoneable, unforgivable by Bhagavān, and destructible only by means of experience [of its effects] disappears [i.e., recedes without having to be suffered] because of the greatness of the name. Thus, the speaker says sadā … [i.e., this verse is cited]. As a result of continuous (anu) chanting (kīrtana) of the name, one becomes fortunate (dhanyaḥ) and purified (pāvanaḥ), meaning, completely purified. Alternately, one shall not just then only become purified oneself; rather, one [then] purifies even others and becomes fit for the wealth of bhakti to Bhagavān in the form of prema. Although even defamation (nindā) is said to be an offense to the name in [the verse], “Defamation of the sat causes the greatest offense to the name” (satāṁ nindā nāmnaḥ paramam aparādhaṁ vitanute) in the Nāmāparādha-stotra [i.e., in this section about the offenses to the name in Padma Purāṇa], and [although] constant malice (sadā droha-paraḥ) [as mentioned in the verse under discussion] is all the more [i.e., is most certainly an offense to the name] and thus our verily falling into a terrible hell (mahānaraka) because of this most severe offense is declared by [verses such as], “As a result of offense even to the name, the well-wisher of all, one certainly falls down” (nāmno’pi sarva-suhṛdo hy aparādhāt pataty adhaḥ), still no sort of fault ensues for those who are devoted to the name, and rather, a special form of bhakti verily arises [in their hearts by the name’s influence over them]. Therefore, it was very rightly stated [in the verse under discussion], ‘One becomes purified [alt., purifying] and fortunate [as a result of continuous chanting of Hari’s name, i.e., the point is made in the verse under discussion that the name purifies even those who make offenses against it of those offenses and thus those who constantly take shelter in the name become both free from all offenses and fit to receive prema-bhakti for the bearer of the name, Śrī Bhagavān].’”
