कल्पयित्वात्मना यावदाभासमिदमीश्वर: ।
द्वैतं तावन्न विरमेत्ततो ह्यस्य विपर्यय: ॥

kalpayitvātmanā yāvad ābhāsam idam īśvaraḥ |
dvaitaṁ tāvan na viramet tato hy asya viparyayaḥ ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 7.12.10)

[Translation based on Bhāvārtha-dīpikā:] “As long as the jīva is not capable by means of the ātmā [i.e., by virtue of self-realization, ātma-sākṣātkāra] of determining this [i.e., the body, senses, and so forth] to be a guise [i.e., a mere false appearance], then duality [i.e., perception of distinctions such as, “He is a man; she is a woman,”] does not cease, and certainly thereby one’s misapprehension [i.e., one’s mentality of enjoyment] remains.”

[Translation based on Sārārtha-darśinī-ṭīkā:] “As long as even one who is capable [of jñāna] has [merely] determined [i.e., only superficially considered] this [i.e., identification with the body, the bodily, and so forth] to be a guise [i.e., a mere false appearance,] and remains with the mind as it is [i.e., without making any real change therein], then duality [i.e., perception of distinctions such as, “I am a man; she is a woman; this is dear to me,”] does not cease, and certainly thereby one’s regression occurs [i.e., one returns to and takes birth again in saṁsāra].”

[Alternate translation based on a second interpretation in Sārārtha-darśinī-ṭīkā:] “[Even after having given up one’s relationships with one’s son, sister, and other relatives, and conquered one’s senses,] To the extent one conceives of this guise [i.e., the guise of these relationships, such as, “This is my sister; this is my mother; this is my son,” and so on] and is controlled [i.e., is controlled by the happiness arising from the affection produced by these relationships], then to that extent duality does not cease, and certainly thereby one’s regression occurs [i.e., one returns to and takes birth again in saṁsāra even though one’s engagement in these relationships seems slight and insignificant].”

Commentary

yad vā, nanu tyakta-suta-bhaginy-ādi-bandhu-vargasya jitendriyasya kim asmād bhayam? tatrāha—kalpayitveti |
(Excerpt from the Sārārtha-darśinī-tīkā)

“Alternately, [a question is raised:] “What fear does a person who has conquered the senses and has given up one’s relatives, such as one’s son, sister, and so on, have from this [i.e., from being in the proximity of women]? To [answer] this [question], this verse is spoken.”
