(Excerpt from Paramātma Sandarbha: 93)

“The particular vṛtti existent as the essence of the vṛtti which is named hlādinī and existent as the essence of [Bhagavān’s] svarūpa-śakti, which itself is existent as the supreme essence [of all of existence] is [called] bhakti [i.e., the most essential vṛtti of the hlādinī-vṛtti of the svarūpa-śakti is called bhakti], and that bhakti, a synonym of which is rati, dwells forever in Bhagavān and the bhakta, itself cast into both domains [i.e., into these two entities of distinct nature, namely, Bhagavān and his bhakta]. Therefore, it is said [in SB 10.86.59], ‘Bhagavān is he who possesses bhakti for his bhaktas.’ Thus, when Bhagavān’s satisfaction occurs because of that [i.e., bhakti] situated in his bhakta [i.e., because of something located outside of himself], there is no loss of his being self-satisfied. On the contrary, because of its [i.e., bhakti’s] manifesting [only] like a distinct vṛtti as a result of its manifesting in the heart of bhakta as per the reasoning [based on Śrī Bhagavān’s statement in BG 4.11], ‘As they approach me, so exactly I reciprocate with them,’ on account of its being both different and non-different from his [i.e., Bhagavān’s] svarūpa (nature) by virtue of [its] being his śakti, it also becomes a tremendous bliss and wonder for Bhagavān, such that [he feels], ‘His [i.e., my bhakta’s] bhakti delights me.’”

“Thus, in this way, the manifestation of various results [of engaging in acts of bhakti] only after attaining someone of specific eligibility [i.e., a person who is free from inoffensiveness] is seen [i.e., the results of bhakti manifest only in those who engage in bhakti free from aparādha]. So also [the various results of engaging in acts of bhakti manifesting] after attaining one in whom relish (ruci) has manifest [is described in SB 11.6.44]: ‘O Kṛṣṇa, having attained [i.e., heard about] your superb play, which is the highest auspiciousness for human beings and nectar for the ears, people relinquish [their] desire for all else.’ Therefore, it is said [in Viṣṇu-sahasra-nāma-stotra (133)], ‘O Puruṣottama, bhaktas established in purity have neither anger, nor envy, nor greed, nor an inauspicious disposition.’ [So also the results of engaging in acts of bhakti manifesting] After attaining one in whom prema has manifest [is described by Mahārāja Parīkṣit to Śukadeva Gosvāmī in SB 10.1.13], ‘Even though I have given up [taking even] water, this extremely difficult to bear hunger does not trouble me as I drink the nectar of discussion of Hari flowing from your lotus mouth.‘”

Having in this way understood the state of a person [i.e., of the puruṣa—the jīva], the wise on the earth—the faithful—worship your feet, which are the field of the Nigamas [i.e., the source of all the śāstras, alt., the object described by all the śāstras] and the negation of material existence [i.e., the cause of the cessation of saṁsāra].”

They who with unalloyed bhāva engage in resolute bhakti to me, they who have given up karmas and given up relatives and friends for me, they who hear and recount pure narrations about me, they of mind given over to me whom the various miseries do not trouble—O Sādhvī [i.e., O pure Mother], they are the sādhus, and [they] are completely free from all attachment. Therefore, attachment to them is to be desired by you, as they are removers of the fault of attachment.”
