Śrīdhara Svāmīpāda

ṛṣe vidanti munayaḥ praśāntātmendriyāśayāḥ

ṛṣe vidanti munayaḥ praśāntātmendriyāśayāḥ |
yadā tad evāsat-tarkais tirodhīyeta viplutam ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 2.6.41)

“O sage, when of calm body, senses, and mind, contemplatives know him [i.e., Bhagavān]. [When] Assailed by spurious argumentation (asat-tarka) [however] he conceals himself.”

sa vai nivṛtti-dharmeṇa vāsudevānukampayā |
bhagavad-bhakti-yogena tirodhatte śanair iha ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 3.7.12)

“By the favor of Vāsudeva—[that is, by] the practice of bhakti to Bhagavān accompanied by observance of desistance (nivṛtti-dharma)—that [i.e., the nature of the non-self, meaning, identification with the adjuncts of māyā, delusion, etc.] indeed gradually disappears here [i.e., in this world].”

evaṁ sañjāta-vairāgyo vijñānāloka ātmani |
vicarāmi mahīm etāṁ mukta-saṅgo’nahaṅkṛtaḥ ||

“Thus endowed with non-attachment (vairāgya) and the light of refined knowledge in regard to the Self, I roam about this earth freed from attachment and without egotism.”

nānyatra sajjed yata ātma-pātaḥ ||

“One should worship him [i.e., Bhagavān],
The Reality,
The Reservoir of Bliss.
One should not be attached elsewhere
Because the downfall of the self occurs [as a result].”

tamo-dvāraṁ yoṣitāṁ saṅgi-saṅgam |
mahāntas te sama-cittāḥ praśāntā
vimanyavaḥ suhṛdaḥ sādhavo ye |
ye vā mayīśe kṛta-sauhṛdārthā
janeṣu dehambhara-vārtikeṣu ||
gṛheṣu jāyātmaja-rātimatsu
na prīti-yuktā yāvad-arthāś ca loke ||

“Service to the mahats is said to be the door to ultimate mukti, and attachment to those who are attached to women [is said to be] the door to darkness. The mahāntas are they who are of equal mind, tranquil, free from anger, friendly, and virtuous, or, they who (1) have made affection [i.e., prema] for me, Īśa, their aim, (2) are unpossessed of affinity for persons fixated upon affairs related to bodily maintenance and houses accompanied by wives, children, and friends, and (3) are possessed of only so much wealth [as is necessary] in this world.”

atha vandanam
praṇamed atha sāṣṭāṅgaṁ tan-mudrāṁ ca pradarśayet |
paṭhet prati-praṇāmaṁ ca prasīda bhagavann iti ||
tad uktam ekādaśe śrī-bhagavatā—
stavair uccāvacaiḥ stotraiḥ paurāṇaiḥ prākṛtair api |
stutvā prasīda bhagavann iti vandeta daṇḍavat ||
(Hari-bhakti-vilāsa: 8.357–358)

“Now, [offering] obeisance [shall be described]: Then, one should prostrate with eight limbs and show the mudrā thereof. With every prostration, one should also declare, ‘Be pleased, O Bhagavān!’ This is stated by Śrī Bhagavān in the Eleventh [Canto, i.e., SB 11.27.45], ‘One should [offer] praise with various stavas and stotras, ancient and vernacular, [entreat Bhagavān,] ‘Be pleased, O Bhagavān,’ and offer obeisance like a stick.”

śrī-bhāgavata-nidhy-arthā ṭīkā-dṛṣṭir adāyi yaiḥ |
śrīdhara-svāmipādāṁs tān vande bhakty-eka-rakṣakān ||
svāmi-pādair na yad vyaktaṁ yad vyaktaṁ cāsphuṭaṁ kvacit |
tatra tatra ca vijñeyaḥ sandarbhaḥ krama-nāmakaḥ ||
(Krama-sandarbha-ṭīkā on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 1.1.1)

“I offer obeisance unto him, Śrīdhara Svāmīpāda, the sole guardian of bhakti, by whom was given the vision of his commentary on the treasure Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. This sandarbha [i.e., treatise on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam] known as Krama [i.e., this Krama-sandarbha-ṭīkā] is to be understood [to apply] in regard to what was not explained by Svāmīpāda and sometimes to what was explained unclearly [by him in his Bhāvārtha-dīpikā on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam].”

kṛṣṇa-bhakti-sudhā-pānād deha-daihika-vismṛteḥ |
teṣāṁ bhautika-dehe’pi sac-cid-ānanda-rūpatā ||
(Bṛhad Bhāgavatāmṛta: 1.3.61)

“On account of non-remembrance of the body and the bodily as a result of drinking the nectar of bhakti to Kṛṣṇa, their having a form [constituted] of eternal being, consciousness, and bliss can come about even [when they are] in a body [made] of the [material] elements.”

“What grateful person would not worship he who swiftly saved the crying lady elephants’ elephant-king [i.e., Gajendra] from danger while [the elephant-king was] meditating on his lotus feet after being seized by a crocodile, [he] who is easily propitiated by persons who are sincere and of undivided shelter yet difficult to propitiate for the unvirtuous?”

“[Śrī Kṛṣṇa to Uddhava:] One should perform karmas so long as one shall not become disinterested or so long as śraddhā in hearing and so forth of discussion about me does not manifest.”
