ससर्ज च्छाययाविद्यां पञ्चपर्वाणमग्रत: ।
तामिस्रमन्धतामिस्रं तमो मोहो महातम: ॥

sasarja cchāyayāvidyāṁ pañca-parvāṇam agrataḥ |
tāmisram andha-tāmisraṁ tamo moho mahā-tamaḥ ||

“First, he [i.e., Brahmā] emanated with his shadow fivefold avidyā (ignorance): tāmisra, andha-tāmisra, tamas, moha, and mahāmoha.”

Commentary

atra tamo-moha-mahāmoha-tāmisrāndha-tāmisrāḥ krameṇājñānāsmitā-rāga-dveṣābhiniveśā jñeyāḥ |

“Here, by the order tamas, moha, mahāmoha, tāmisra, and andha-tāmisram, [the five types of affliction described in the Yoga-sūtra, viz.,] ajñāna [i.e., avidyā], asmitā, rāga, dveṣa, and abhiniveśa are to be understood.”
