“May Gaura Govinda—
He by the splendor of whose feet
Madana [i.e., Kāma] is vanquished,
He by the splendor of whose face
The pride of lotuses and jewels is crushed,
He at whose feet Śrī Rūpa has taken shelter—
Bestow grace upon me.”
Commentary
Śrī Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa Gosvāmī prefaces his presentation of this praṇāma in his Sādhana-dīpikā with the following account:
atha śrī-mahāprabhoḥ śrī-vṛndāvanāgamana-kathā prācīnā—

(Sādhana-dīpikā: 2)
“Now, an old narration of Śrī Mahāprabhu’s coming to Śrī Vṛndāvana: ‘I offer obeisance to Śrīmat Kāśīśvara, under the control of whose love (prīti) Caitanyadeva himself graciously came to the western country.’
“Now, a narration heard from the holy mouth of an associate of Śrī [Caitanya] Mahāprabhu: Once [in Śrī Jagannātha Purī], Śrī Mahāprabhu said to Śrī Kāśīśvara: ‘May you go to Śrī Vṛndāvana and reside in the company of Śrīla Rūpa and Sanātana.’ Upon hearing this, he [i.e., Śrī Kāśīśvara] became quite delighted and shocked. The Crest-jewel of the all-knowing [i.e., Śrī Mahāprabhu], knowing his heart, again spoke [to him], ‘Take the Śrī Kṛṣṇa Deity dwelling by the side of Śrī Jagannātha [here in Purī with you to Śrī Vṛndāvana] and know him [i.e., this Deity] to be non-different from me on account of [this Deity’s] being Svayaṁ Bhagavān. From then on, worship him.’ Upon hearing this, he [i.e., Śrī Kāśīśvara] became silent. Thereafter, eating was performed by the Deity of Śrī Kṛṣṇa of golden figure and Mahāprabhu [i.e., then it was so arranged that this Deity of Śrī Kṛṣṇa who was previously situated beside Śrī Jagannātha in his temple and who has a golden figure, was brought, Śrīman Mahāprabhu was sat with the Deity, and both Śrīman Mahāprabhu and the golden Kṛṣṇa Deity ate an offering of food together, presumably to assure Śrī Kāśīśvara that Śrīman Mahāprabhu was non-different from this golden Deity of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and thus pacify Śrī Kāśīśvara’s heart in regard to his imminent departure for and future residence in Śrī Vṛndāvana where he was to remain at a distance from Śrīman Mahāprabhu and thus no longer have the opportunity to serve Śrīman Mahāprabhu personally as he had been doing so up to that time in Śrī Jagannātha Purī]. Śrī Kāśīśvara then offered a prostrate obeisance and brought the Gaura [“Golden”] Govinda Deity to Śrī Vṛndāvana. He is [thus a form of] Śrī Mahāprabhu beside Śrī Govinda [i.e., this Golden Govinda Deity presently situated to the right of the Śrī Govindadeva Deity who discovered and worshiped by Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī in Vṛndāvana is regard to be a form of Śrīman Mahāprabhu].”
