केवलं परमं दैन्यमवलम्ब्यास्य शिक्षया ।
श्रीमन्मदनगोपालचरणाब्जमुपासत ॥
kevalaṁ paramaṁ dainyam avalambyāsya śikṣayā |
śrīman-madana-gopāla-caraṇābjam upāsata ||
(Bṛhad Bhāgavatāmṛta: 1.7.153)
“Taking to profound humility exclusively
In accord with his teaching,
They worshiped the lotus feet
Of Śrīman Madana Gopāla.”
Commentary
nanv avastu-tyāgena kā nāma sāra-saṅgrāhitety āśaṅkyāha—kevalam iti | dainyaṁ nijākṛtārthatvādi-jñānena bhagavat-pāda-padma-bhakty-abhāvādinā vā yārtiḥ tat kevalam āśritya tenaiva bhagavad-anugraha-bhara-siddheḥ | asya nāradasya śikṣayā tat-kṛtopadeśena |

“[A question may be raised:] ‘Well, what sort of full grasping of the essence has occurred [just] by relinquishment of that which is insubstantial?’ Expecting this [question], he says kevalam … [i.e., Śrī Parīkṣit Mahārāja speaks this verse, wherein the essence fully grasped by the sages who heard Śrī Nārada’s narration is described]. Taking shelter exclusively in humility (dainya)—heartache (ārti) as a result of awareness of one’s own unsuccessfulness and so forth, or, as a result of one’s lack of bhakti to the lotus feet of Bhagavān and so forth— because of attainment of an abundance of Bhagavān’s grace only thereby [i.e., it is only by means of taking shelter exclusively in such humility (dainya) that one can attain Śrī Bhagavān’s grace]. ‘In accord with his teaching (asya śikṣayā) means in accord with the instruction given by him—Nārada.”
