Śrī Śrī Gurudevāṣṭakam
Eight prayers to śrī gurudeva
By Śrīmad Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura
śrī-śrī-gurudevāya namaḥ |
Obeisance unto śrī gurudeva.

saṁsāra-dāvānala-līḍha-loka-
trāṇāya kāruṇya-ghanāghanatvam |
prāptasya kalyāṇa-guṇārṇavasya
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam ||1||
I offer obeisance
Unto the beautiful lotus feet of the guru,
An ocean of excellent qualities
Who assumes the state
Of a dense cloud of compassion
To deliver living beings
Who have been swallowed by the forest fire of saṁsāra.

vāditra-mādyan-manaso rasena |
romāñca-kampāśru-taraṅga-bhājo
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam ||2||
I offer obeisance
Unto the beautiful lotus feet of the guru,
Whose heart becomes maddened
By dancing, singing, and playing instruments
In kīrtana for Mahāprabhu,
And who because of rasa
Sustains waves
Of horripilation, trembling, and tears.
śrī-vigrahārādhana-nitya-nānā-
śṛṅgāra-tan-mandira-mārjanādau |
yuktasya bhaktāṁś ca niyuñjato’pi
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam ||3||
I offer obeisance
Unto the beautiful lotus feet of the guru,
Who is absorbed
In worship of the beautiful deity—
In daily [offering] various fine dressings,
Cleaning his temple, and so forth—
And who also engages bhaktas [therein].

svādv-anna-tṛptān hari-bhakta-saṅghān |
kṛtvaiva tṛptiṁ bhajataḥ sadaiva
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam ||4||
I offer obeisance
Unto the beautiful lotus feet of the guru,
Who indeed always experiences satisfaction
Only upon having made Hari’s bhaktas satisfied
With tasteful food
In the form of the four types of Śrī Bhagavān’s prasāda.

mādhurya-līlā-guṇa-rūpa-nāmnām |
prati-kṣaṇāsvādana-lolupasya
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam ||5||
I offer obeisance
Unto the beautiful lotus feet of the guru,
Who is deeply eager
To relish at every moment
The unlimitedly sweet names, forms, qualities, and līlās
Of Śrī Rādhikā and Mādhava.
nikuñja-yūno rati-keli-siddhyair
yā yālibhir yuktir apekṣaṇīyā |
tatrātidākṣyād ati-vallabhasya
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam ||6||
I offer obeisance
Unto the beautiful lotus feet of the guru,
Who is very dear [to Rādhikā and Mādhava]
On account of [having] great expertise
In those particular arts required by the sakhīs
To bring about the Forest Couple’s love-play.
sākṣād dharitvena samasta-śāstrair
uktas tathā bhāvyata eva sadbhiḥ |
kintu prabhor yaḥ priya eva tasya
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam ||7||
I offer obeisance
Unto the beautiful lotus feet of the guru,
He who is described by all the śāstras
As being Hari in person,
Is also considered so by the sat,
Yet is actually a dear one of Prabhu [i.e., a bhakta of Hari].
yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādo
yasyāprasādān na gatiḥ kuto’pi |
dhyāyaṁ stuvaṁs tasya yaśas tri-sandhyaṁ
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇaravindam ||8||
I offer obeisance
Unto the beautiful lotus feet of the guru,
Meditating upon and praising
At the three junctions of the day
The glory of he by the satisfaction [alt., grace] (prasāda) of whom
Bhagavān’s grace manifests
And by the dissatisfaction [alt., disfavor] (aprasāda) of whom
There is no refuge from anywhere [i.e., not even from Bhagavān].
śrīmad guror aṣṭakam etad uccair
brāhme muhūrte paṭhati prayatnāt |
yas tena vṛndāvana-nātha-sākṣāt-
sevaiva labhyā januṣo’nta eva ||9||
Direct service to the Lord of Vṛndāvana
Is certainly attainable at the end of life
By one who with concerted effort
Recites aloud during the brāhma-muhūrta
This poem of eight verses about śrī guru.
iti śrī-śrī-gurudevāṣṭakaṁ samāptam |
Thus the Śrī Gurudevāṣṭakam is concluded.
