Enmity

śāstraṁ hy abuddhvā tattvena kecid vāda-balāj janāḥ

śāstraṁ hy abuddhvā tattvena kecid vāda-balāj janāḥ |
kāma-dveṣābhibhūtatvād ahaṅkāra-vaśaṁ gatāḥ ||
yāthātathyam avijñāya śāstrāṇāṁ śāstra-dasyavaḥ |
brahma-stenā nirārambhā dambha-moha-vaśānugāḥ ||
(Mahābhārata: Śānti-parva, 269.53)

“Not understanding śāstra accurately, some persons become captivated by arrogance (ahaṅkāra) on account of being overcome by desire or enmity on the strength of argument. Without knowing the truth of the śāstras, the robbers of the śāstras—thieves of Brahman—controlled by deceit and delusion, remain without undertaking [i.e., they do not take up the practices taught in the śāstras beginning with equanimity and so on].”

yadā na kurute bhāvaṁ sarva-bhūteṣv amaṅgalam |
sama-dṛṣṭes tadā puṁsaḥ sarvāḥ sukhamayā diśaḥ ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 9.19.15)

“When a person does not foster an attitude of inauspiciousness towards all living beings, then, because of [one’s] equal vision, all directions are filled with happiness.”

ekāsnigdhāḥ kākiṇinā sadyaḥ sarve’rayaḥ kṛtāḥ ||

tyajanty āśu spṛdho ghnanti sahasotsṛjya sauhṛdam ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 11.23.20–21)

“[Even] United and greatly affectionate brothers, wives, parents, and friends are all immediately turned into enemies and divided by twenty cowries [i.e., even by an extremely small amount of money]. For even a small amount of wealth, they quickly become disturbed, inflamed, and inimical, reject one another, give up their affection, and destroy one another.”

na tatra mūḍhā gacchanti puruṣā viṣayātmakāḥ |
dambha-lobha-bhaya-droha-krodha-mohair abhidrutāḥ ||
nirmamā nirahaṅkārā nirdvandvāḥ saṁyatendriyāḥ |
dhyāna-yoga-ratāś caiva tatra gacchanti sādhavaḥ ||
(Padma Purāṇa: 2.95.16–18; cited in Prīti Sandarbha: 10)

“Foolish persons absorbed in objects of the senses and overpowered by deceit [alt., arrogance], greed, fear, enmity, anger, and delusion, do not reach there [i.e., the supreme abode of Viṣṇu]. Only sādhus free from possessiveness, free from egotism, free from duality, of controlled senses, and engaged in the practice of meditation (dhyāna-yoga) reach there.”

na kaścit kasyacin mitraṁ na kaścit kasyacid ripuḥ |
vyavahāreṇa mitrāṇi jāyante ripavas tathā ||
(Hitopadeśa: 1.72)

“No one is [inherently] anyone’s friend, and no one is [inherently] anyone’s enemy. Friends and enemies are created by behavior.”

durjanena samaṁ sakhyaṁ vairaṁ cāpi na kārayet |
uṣṇo dahati cāṅgāraḥ śīto kṛṣṇāyate karam ||

“Make neither friendship nor enmity with a wicked person, who is comparable to a piece of coal, which when hot burns your hand and when cold turns it black.”

naiva tuṣye’rcito’rcāyāṁ bhūta-grāmāvamāninaḥ ||

[Kapiladeva:] “O sinless one [i.e., O mother], I am certainly not pleased when worshipped in the deity with rites performed with variegated materials by one who disrespects [i.e., engages in defamation of other] living beings.”

bhūteṣu baddha-vairasya na manaḥ śāntim ṛcchati ||

[Kapiladeva:] “The mind of one who is hostile towards me in [all] other bodies, [that is,] one who is of disunited vision [i.e., devoid of singular vision of my presence as the indwelling regulator everywhere], [thus] proud, and [thus] bound by enmity towards [other] beings, does not attain peace.”
