समासवाक्यं विग्रहः ।
samāsa-vākyaṁ vigrahaḥ |

“An explanation of a compound is [called] a vigraha [i.e., isolation and analysis of the words (padas) in a compound that produces specific understanding of the meaning of the compound].”
Commentary
samāsasyārtha-kathana-rūpaṁ yad vākyaṁ prayujyate sa eva vigraha ucyate |
(Amṛta-ṭīkā)
“An explanation that is employed in the form of discussion of the meaning of a compound is called a vigraha.”
The Siddhānta-kaumudī writes in this regard:
vṛtty-arthāvabodhakaṁ vākyaṁ vigrahaḥ |
“An explanation causing understanding of the meaning of a vṛtti [i.e., a samāsa] is [called] a vigraha.”
