प्रापञ्चिकतया बुद्ध्या हरिसम्बन्धिवस्तुनः ।
मुमुक्षुभिः परित्यागो वैराग्यं फल्गु कथ्यते ॥
prāpañcikatayā buddhyā hari-sambandhi-vastunaḥ |
mumukṣubhiḥ parityāgo vairāgyaṁ phalgu kathyate ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 1.2.256)
“The rejection of an object related to Hari by seekers of liberation based on consideration of [its supposedly] being mundane is called useless non-attachment (phalgu-vairāgya).”
Commentary
atha phalgu vairāgyaṁ tu bhakty-anupayuktaṁ yat tad eva jñeyam | tac ca bhagavad-bahirmukhānām aparādha-paryantaṁ syād ity āha prāpañcikatayeti | hari-sambandhi-vastv atra tat-prasādādi | tasya parityāgo dvividhaḥ | aprārthanā prāptānaṅgīkāraś ca | tatrottaras tu sutarām aparādha eva jñeyaḥ | viṣṇu-yāmale—prasādāgrahaṇaṁ viṣṇor ity ādi-vacaneṣu tac-chravaṇāt |
(Durgama-saṅgamanī-ṭīkā and Bhakti-sāra-pradarśinī-ṭīkā)
“Now, specifically the ‘useless non-attachment’ (phalgu-vairāgya) which is indeed unsuitable for bhakti is to be understood. That, furthermore, for those who are oblivious of Bhagavān, shall culminate in offense (aparādhā) [to Bhagavān]. Thus, he says prāpañcikatayā … [i.e., he states this verse]. ‘An object related to Hari’ (Hari-sambandhi-vastu) here refers to his prasāda and so forth. Rejection of this is of two types: not requesting it and not accepting it after receiving it. In this regard, the latter specifically is to be known to verily be an offense (aparādha) on account of hearing of this in statements such as the following in the Viṣṇu-yamala: ‘A Vaiṣṇava should always avoid non-acceptance of Viṣṇu’s prasāda.’”
