प्रदीपः सर्वविद्यानामुपायः सर्वकर्मणाम् ।
आश्रयः सर्वधर्मानां विद्योद्देशे प्रकीर्तिता ॥
pradīpaḥ sarva-vidyānām upāyaḥ sarva-karmaṇām |
āśrayaḥ sarva-dharmānāṁ vidyoddeśe prakīrtitā ||
(Vātsyāyana’s Nyāya-bhāṣya on Gautama’s Nyāya-sūtra: 1.1.1)
“Ānvīkṣikī [i.e., logic (nyāya)] is stated in the enumeration of sciences [i.e., fields of knowledge] to be the lamp of all sciences (vidyās), the means for [accomplishing] all karmas, and the basis of all dharmas.”
Alternate version
प्रदीपः सर्वविद्यानामुपायः सर्वकर्मणाम् ।
आश्रयः सर्वधर्मानां शश्वदान्वीक्षिकी मता ॥
pradīpaḥ sarva-vidyānām upāyaḥ sarva-karmaṇām |
āśrayaḥ sarva-dharmānāṁ śaśvad ānvīkṣikī matā ||
(Artha-śāstra: 1.2.12)
“Ānvīkṣikī [i.e., logic (nyāya) in particular, or, more broadly logical inquiry in general] is considered the perpetual lamp of all sciences (vidyās), means for [accomplishing] all karmas, and basis of all dharmas.”
