Eight verses in praise of Śrī Śrī Narottama Prabhu

श्रीकृष्णनामामृतवर्षिवक्त्र-
चन्द्रप्रभाध्वस्ततमोभराय ।
गौराङ्गदेवानुचराय तस्मै
नमो नमः श्रीलनरोत्तमाय ॥१॥

śrī-kṛṣṇa-nāmāmṛta-varṣi-vaktra-
candra-prabhā-dhvasta-tamo-bharāya |
gaurāṅga-devānucarāya tasmai
namo namaḥ śrīla-narottamāya ||1||

Obeisance and obeisance unto him, Śrīla Narottama, the servant of Gaurāṅgadeva who dispels the darkness [of ignorance] with the radiance of his moon face showering the nectar of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s name.

सङ्कीर्त्तनानन्दजमन्दहास्य-
दन्तद्युतिद्योतितदिङ्मुखाय ।
स्वेदाश्रुधारास्नपिताय तस्मै
नमो नमः श्रीलनरोत्तमाय ॥२॥

saṅkīrtanānandaja-manda-hāsya-
danta-dyuti-dyotita-diṅ-mukhāya |
svedāśru-dhārā-snapitāya tasmai
namo namaḥ śrīla-narottamāya ||2||

Obeisance and obeisance unto him, Śrīla Narottama, who is bathed in streams of tears and perspiration and has illuminated the directions with the luster of his teeth amidst his gentle smile born of the bliss of saṅkīrtana.

मृदङ्गनामश्रुतिमात्रचञ्चत्-
पदाम्बुजामन्दमनोहराय ।
सद्यः समुद्यत्पुलकाय तस्मै
नमो नमः श्रीलनरोत्तमाय ॥३॥

mṛdaṅga-nāma-śruti-mātra-cañcat-
padāmbujāmanda-manoharāya |
sadyaḥ samudyat-pulakāya tasmai
namo namaḥ śrīla-narottamāya ||3||

Obeisance and obeisance unto him, Śrīla Narottama, who immediately upon hearing the name and the mṛdaṅga strongly captivates the hearts of all with his dancing lotus feet and figure which quickly become covered with complete horripilation.

गन्धर्वगर्वक्षपणस्वलास्य-
विस्मापिताशेषकृतिव्रजाय ।
स्वसृटगानप्रथिताय तस्मै
नमो नमः श्रीलनरोत्तमाय ॥४॥

gandharva-garva-kṣapaṇa-svalāsya-
vismāpitāśeṣa-kṛti-vrajāya |
svasṛṭa-gāna-prathitāya tasmai
namo namaḥ śrīla-narottamāya ||4||

Obeisance and obeisance unto him, Śrīla Narottama, who crushes the pride of the Gandharvas, astonishes with his dancing the entire society of the learned, and is renowned for the songs he composes.

आनन्दमूर्च्छावनिपातभात-
धूलीभरालङ्कृतविग्रहाय ।
यद्दर्शनं भाग्यभरेण तस्मै
नमो नमः श्रीलनरोत्तमाय ॥५॥

ānanda-mūrcchāvani-pāta-bhāta-
dhūlī-bharālaṅkṛta-vigrahāya |
yad darśanaṁ bhāgya-bhareṇa tasmai
namo namaḥ śrīla-narottamāya ||5||

Obeisance and obeisance unto him, Śrīla Narottama, whose sight is attained only by an abundance of good fortune and whose figure, having fainted in bliss and fallen to the earth, shines decorated by an abundance of dust.

स्थले स्थले यस्य कृपाप्रपाभिः
कृष्णान्यतृष्णा जनसंहतीनाम् ।
निर्म्मूलिता एव भवन्ति तस्मै
नमो नमः श्रीलनरोत्तमाय ॥६॥

sthale sthale yasya kṛpā-prapābhiḥ
kṛṣṇānya-tṛṣṇā jana-saṁhatīnām |
nirmūlitā eva bhavanti tasmai
namo namaḥ śrīla-narottamāya ||6||

Obeisance and obeisance unto him, Śrīla Narottama, because of whose grace, which is comparable to water stations established from place to place, people’s thirst [for all things] apart from Kṛṣṇa becomes completely uprooted.

prapābhiḥ: “Because of water stations.” Traditionally, a prapā is a shed or camp set up on the side of a road containing a reservoir of water where travellers can rest briefly and quench their thirst.

यद्भक्तिनिष्ठोपलरेखिकेव
स्पर्शः पुनः स्पर्शमणीव यस्य ।
प्रामाण्यमेवं श्रूतिवद्यदीयं
तस्मै नमः श्रीलनरोत्तमाय ॥७॥

yad bhakti-niṣṭhopala-rekhikeva
sparśaḥ punaḥ sparśa-maṇīva yasya |
prāmāṇyam evaṁ śrūtivad yad īyaṁ
tasmai namaḥ śrīla-narottamāya ||7||

Obeisance and obeisance unto Śrīla Narottama, whose constancy in bhakti is like a line (carved) in stone, whose touch is like that of a philosopher’s stone, and whose speech is authoritative like the Veda.

मूर्त्तैव भक्तिः किमयं किमेष
वैराग्यसारस्तनुमान् नृलोके ।
संभाव्यते यः कृतिभिः सदैव
तस्मै नमः श्रीलनरोत्तमाय ॥८॥

mūrtaiva bhaktiḥ kim ayaṁ kim eṣa
vairāgya-sāras tanumān nṛ-loke |
saṁbhāvyate yaḥ kṛtibhiḥ sadaiva
tasmai namaḥ śrīla-narottamāya ||8||

Obeisance and obeisance unto Śrīla Narottama, who is always marvelled at by the learned in human society: “Is he verily the embodiment of bhakti or is he the essence of vairāgya personified?”

श्रीराधिकाकृष्णविलाससिन्धौ
निमज्जतः श्रीलनरोत्तमस्य ।
पठेद्य एवाष्टकमेतदुच्चै-
रसौ तदीयां पदवीं प्रयाति ॥९॥

śrī-rādhikā-kṛṣṇa-vilāsa-sindhau
nimajjataḥ śrīla-narottamasya |
paṭhed ya evāṣṭakam etad uccair
asau tadīyāṁ padavīṁ prayāti ||9||

Anyone who loudly recites this poem of eight verses about Śrīla Narottama, who is ever immersed in the ocean of Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa’s vilāsa, will certainly follow his path.

कारुण्यदृष्टिशमिताश्रीतमन्तुकोटि-
रम्याधरोद्यदतिसुन्दरदन्तकान्तिः ।
श्रीमन्नरोत्तममुखाम्बुजमन्दहास्यं
लास्यं तनोतु हृदि मे वितरत्स्वदास्यम् ॥१०॥

kāruṇya-dṛṣṭi-śamitāśrīta-mantu-koṭi-
ramyādharodyad-ati-sundara-danta-kāntiḥ |
śrīman-narottama-mukhāmbuja-manda-hāsyaṁ
lāsyaṁ tanotu hṛdi me vitarat svadāsyam ||10||

Replete with his glance of compassion which absolves those hwo have taken shelter of crores of offences and the luster of his extremely beautiful teeth emerging from his enchanting lips, may the gentle smile on Śrīman Narottama lotus face dance within my heart and bestow upon me his service.

राजन्मृदङ्गकरतालकलाभिरामं
गौराङ्गगानमधुपानभराभिरामम् ।
श्रीमन्नरोत्तमपदाम्बुजमञ्जुनृत्यं
भृत्यं कृतार्थयतु मां फलितेष्टकृत्यम् ॥११॥

rājan mṛdaṅga-karatāla-kalābhirāmaṁ
gaurāṅga-gāna-madhu-pāna-bharābhirāmam |
śrīman-narottama-padāmbuja-mañju-nṛtyaṁ
bhṛtyaṁ kṛtārthayatu māṁ phaliteṣṭa-kṛtyam ||11||

Delightful with the resplendent sounds of the mṛdaṅgas and kartālas and delightful with an abundance of drinking of the nectar of songs about Gaurāṅga, may the enchanting dancing of Śrīman Narottama’s lotus feet make me, his servant, fulfilled in having reaped the fruit of his cherished service.

इति श्रीश्रीमन्नरोत्तमप्रभोरष्टकं समाप्तम् ।

iti śrī-śrīman-narottama-prabhor-aṣṭakaṁ samāptam |

Thus the Śrī Śrīman-Narottama-Prabhor-aṣṭakam is concluded.
