By Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu
Excerpted from Padyāvalī: 22, 31, 32, 94, 71,93, 324, and 337; Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 3.20.12, 16, 21 (1.17.31, 3.6.239), 29, 32, 36, 39, and 47.
ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ bhava-mahādāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ
śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā-vitaraṇaṁ vidyā-vadhū-jīvanam |
ānandāmbudhi-vardhanaṁ prati-padaṁ pūrṇāmṛtāsvādanaṁ
sarvātma-snapanaṁ paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtanam ||1||
Cleansing the mirror of the mind,
Extinguishing the raging forest fire of material existence,
Shining moonlight on the evening lotus of good fortune,
The life of the wife of knowledge,
Expanding the ocean of bliss,
The taste of full nectar at every moment,
Bathing the entire self—
Śrī Kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtana is supremely triumphant!
nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija-sarva-śaktis
tatrārpitā niyamitaḥ smaraṇe na kālaḥ |
etādṛśī tava kṛpā bhagavan mamāpi
durdaivam īdṛśam ihājani nānurāgaḥ ||2||
O Bhagavān,
You have manifested your numerous names,
Imbued all of your śakti into them,
And made no regulation
Regarding the time for remembering them.
Such is your grace.
Still, my misfortune is such
That no attachment to them has manifested [in me].
tṛṇād api sunīcena taror iva sahiṣṇunā |
amāninā mānadena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ ||
Hari is to be praised always
By one who is far lower [i.e., humbler] than even grass,
Tolerant like a tree,
Undesirous of respect,
And respectful [to all].
na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ
kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye |
mama janmani janmanīśvare
bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi ||4||
O Master of the universe,
I desire neither wealth,
Nor men [i.e., assistants, followers, relatives, etc.],
Nor beautiful women [i.e., an excellent wife],
Nor erudition [i.e., intellectual prowess or recognition thereof],
Or otherwise [i.e., mukti].
In birth after birth, O Īśvara,
Let me have unconditional bhakti to you.
ayi nanda-tanuja kiṅkaraṁ
patitaṁ māṁ viṣame bhavāmbudhau |
kṛpayā tava pāda-paṅkaja-
sthita-dhūlī-sadṛśaṁ vicintaya ||5||
Oh! Son of Nanda!
Please graciously consider me,
Your servant who has fallen
Into the precarious ocean of saṁsāra,
To be like a speck of dust
Fixed upon your lotus feet.
nayanaṁ galad-aśru-dhārayā
vadanaṁ gadgada-ruddhayā girā |
pulakair nicitaṁ vapuḥ kadā
tava nāma-grahaṇe bhaviṣyati ||6||
[O Bhagavān!]
When will my eyes become filled with a stream of tears,
My mouth become filled with words checked by faltering,
And my body become filled with horripilation
As I call your name?
yugāyitaṁ nimeṣeṇa cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam |
śūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvaṁ govinda-viraheṇa me ||7||
A moment seems like an age,
My eyes seem to shower rain,
And the whole world seems void
In separation from Govinda.
āśliṣya vā pāda-ratāṁ pinaṣṭu mām
adarśanān marma-hatāṁ karotu vā |
yathā tathā vā vidadhātu lampaṭo
mat-prāṇa-nāthas tu sa eva nāparaḥ ||8||
He may embrace and squeeze me [i.e., take me as his own],
A servant of his feet,
Or he may break my heart with separation [i.e., non-darśana].
Howsoever that libertine may act,
He alone, and no one else,
Is my beloved [lit., the lord of my heart].
