A garland of verses for Mukunda

Introduction

Recensions of the Mukunda-mālā from different regions contain a significant degree of variegation. Here three recensions have been rendered and analyzed in regard to differences in verse count and verse order, as well as in regard to variants and the inclusion and exclusion of particular verses. The first recension, sourced from a 1949 collection of Śrī Vaiṣṇava Sanskrit poetry entitled Stotra-mālā, is referred to here as the Tamilian recension (TR). This recension seems to be the most widely circulated recension at present and contains forty verses. The second recension, sourced from a 1895 publication of the text from Kolkata, is referred to here as the Bengali recension (BR). The third recension, sourced from a 1929 publication of the text from Mumbai in a collection of Sanskrit works entitled Kāvya-mālā, is referred to here as the Kashmiri recension (KR). The BR contains fifty-three verses in total, including all forty found in the TR, though in varying order. Among the additional thirteen verses found in the BR that are not found in the TR, two [viz., 19, 38] are also found in the KR, and eleven [viz., 23, 34, 35, 36, 39, 40, 41, 42, 46, 51, 53] are found in neither the TR nor the KR. The KR also contains five verses found neither in the TR nor the BR [viz., 1, 4, 16, 32, 33].

The brief Sanskrit commentary on the KR given by the editors of its publication state that they reviewed pre-existent publications of the Mukunda-mālā from Mumbai and Kolkata but considered them both incomplete, that is, lacking the entirety of the stotra’s verses, and impure, that is, containing interpolations. They thus preferred to publish another version of the text they obtained from Kashmir, though they did not explain why exactly they considered the Kashmiri recension they found to be the most authentic version of the text. They did, however, share a partial list of verses they considered to have been interpolated into the pre-existent editions they consulted and thus excluded from their publication. For reference, these excluded verses have also been included in the commentary herein on the KR following verse nine.

In this edition, the Tamilian recension is presented first accompanied by cross-references to the verses in the BR and KR and an analysis of variants that exist among the recensions. Following the TR, the BR is presented along with translations reflecting the variants found in this recension and then the KR is presented with further adjusted translations where appropriate.

Note also that standardization of optional sandhi rules has been done in the presentation here of all three recensions wherein rules such as changing a visarga (ḥ) to a palatal s (ś) or cerebral s (ṣ) have been omitted.

Kulaśekhara-praṇati

घुष्यते यस्य नगरे रङ्गयात्रा दिने दिने ।
तमहं शिरसा वन्दे राजानं कुलशेखरम् ॥

ghuṣyate yasya nagare raṅga-yātrā dine dine |
tam ahaṁ śirasā vande rājānaṁ kulaśekharam ||

I offer obeisance with my head to him, King Kulaśekhara, in whose city day after day Raṅga Yātrā is announced [i.e., citizens are invited to go on a pilgrimage to see Śrī Raṅganātha in Śrī Raṅgam].

Commentary

Although evidently not a part of the Mukunda-mālā itself, many editions of the text include this verse in honor of the author King Kulaśekhara before the main text of the stotra. The king’s arranging to have announcements and arrangements made for daily pilgrimage to Śrī Raṅgam in Tamil Nadu from the domain of his own kingdom in Kerala is stated to illustrate that the king was fully devoted to the service of Śrī Bhagavān both in his personal life and in his public affairs.

भक्तप्रियेति भवलुण्ठनकोविदेति ।
नाथेति नागशयनेति जगन्निवासे-
त्यालापिनं प्रतिपदं कुरु मे मुकुन्द ॥१॥

bhakta-priyeti bhava-luṇṭhana-kovideti |

O Mukunda!

Commentary

This verse was recited by Śrīman Mahāprabhu before Śrī Jagannātha during Ratha Yātrā according to Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta (2.13.78), though in the text there jayatu is spelled jayati.

O Mukunda!

Birth after birth

I bow at the two of your feet
Not for the sake of non-duality [i.e., to attain mokṣa],
Nor to evade the fearsome hell of boiling oil (Kumbhīpāka),
Nor even to enjoy the creepers
Of the supple bodies
Of beautiful women in Nandana [i.e., the pleasure garden of Indra in Svarga].
Birth after birth,
In the temple of my heart,
May I meditate upon you.

नास्था धर्मे न वसुनिचये नैव कामोपभोगे
यद्यद्भव्यं भवतु भगवन् पूर्वकर्मानुरूपम् ।
एतत्प्रार्थ्यं मम बहुमतं जन्मजन्मान्तरेऽपि
त्वत्पादाम्भोरुहयुगगता निश्चला भक्तिरस्तु ॥५॥

nāsthā dharme na vasu-nicaye naiva kāmopabhoge
yad yad bhavyaṁ bhavatu bhagavan pūrva-karmānurūpam |
etat prārthyaṁ mama bahu-mataṁ janma-janmāntare’pi
tvat-pādāmbhoruha-yuga-gatā niścalā bhaktir astu ||5||

I have interest neither in merits (dharma),
Nor in riches [i.e., artha],
Nor in partaking of objects of enjoyment (kāma).
Whatever ought to be, let it be,
O Bhagavān,
In accord with my past karma.
My greatly cherished desired end is this:
Indeed in birth after birth,
Let me have unwavering bhakti
Fixed upon your two lotus feet.

narake vā narakāntaka prakāmam |
avadhīrita-śāradāravindau
caraṇau te maraṇe’pi cintayāmi ||6||

O Destroyer of Naraka!
Let my residence be in the sky [i.e., Svarga],
Or on earth,
Or in Naraka,
As so willed [by you].
[But] Even at death,
I shall think of your feet,
By which autumnal lotuses are surpassed.

Commentary

This verse is cited by Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (2.5.29) as an illustration of prīti-rati [i.e., dāsya-rati].

कृष्ण त्वदीयपदपङ्कजपञ्जरान्त-
मद्यैव मे विशतु मानसराजहंसः ।
प्राणप्रयाणसमये कफवातपित्तैः
कण्ठावरोधनविधौ स्मरणं कुतस्ते ॥७॥

kṛṣṇa tvadīya-pada-paṅkaja-pañjarāntam
adyaiva me viśatu mānasa-rāja-haṁsaḥ |
prāṇa-prayāṇa-samaye kapha-vāta-pittaiḥ
kaṇṭhāvarodhana-vidhau smaraṇaṁ kutas te ||7||

O Kṛṣṇa!
May the royal swan of my mind
Enter today itself
Into the enclosure of your lotus feet.
At the time of my prāṇa departing [from my body]
And choking my throat
With phlegm, air, and bile,
How will I remember you?

मन्दमन्दहसिताननाम्बुजम् ।
नन्दगोपतनयं परात्परं
नारदादिमुनिवृन्दवन्दितम् ॥८॥

cintayāmi harim eva santataṁ
manda-manda-hasitānanāmbujam |
nanda-gopa-tanayaṁ parātparaṁ
nāradādi-muni-vṛnda-vanditam ||8||

I think always only of Hari,
He of gently, gently smiling lotus face,
The Son of Nanda Gopa,
Greater than the greatest,
Worshipped by Nārada and other sages.

Diving into the lake of Hari,
Unfathomable in depth,
And relieving of weariness—
In the midst of the lotuses of his hands and feet,
The fish of his shining eyes,
And the surging waves of his arms—
And drinking the waters of his splendor,
I who am exhausted
In the desert of material existence
Now do away with [all such] distress.

Is Śrīdhara not our master?
Cast away sloth
And meditate on Nārāyaṇa,
Who is easily attainable by bhakti.
What is the Dispeller of the world’s distress
Not capable of for the sake of his servant?

भवजलधिगतानां द्वन्द्ववाताहतानां
सुतदुहितृकलत्रत्राणभारार्दितानाम् ।

Submerged in the terrible whirlpool of the sense objects,
And bereft of a vessel,
May the extraordinary boat of Viṣṇu be the refuge.

bhava-jaladhim agādhaṁ dustaraṁ nistareyaṁ
katham aham iti ceto mā sma gāḥ kātaratvam |

How shall I cross over
The unfathomable and difficult to cross
Ocean of material existence?
O mind!
Do not enter a state of timidity [worrying in this way].
The helmsman of one-pointed bhakti
Set upon Deva, he of lotus eyes,
The Destroyer of Naraka,
Will certainly deliver you.

Upon us who are submerged
In the vast ocean known as saṁsāra
Infested with the shiver of the sharks
Of siblings and descendants,
The whirlpool of wives,
Sets of waves of delusion
Raised by the winds of passion,
And the water of desire,
Please grant the boat
Of bhakti to your lotus feet,
O you who are the light of the three [worlds]!
O Bestower of benedictions!

mā bhūvaṁ tvat-saparyā-vyatikara-rahito janma-janmāntare’pi ||15||

O Mādhava,
O Lord of the universe,
May I not see, even for a moment,
Those devoid of good fortune
Who are deprived of bhakti to your lotus feet;
May I not reject narrations of you,
Compositions [most] worthy to be heard,
And listen to any other type of discourse;
May I not remember those who deny you, even in their minds;
Indeed in birth after birth,
May I not become deprived
Of engaging in your service.

jihve kīrtaya keśavaṁ mura-ripuṁ ceto bhaja śrīdharaṁ
pāṇi-dvandva samarcayācyuta-kathāḥ śrotra-dvaya tvaṁ śṛṇu |
kṛṣṇaṁ lokaya locana-dvaya harer gacchāṅghri-yugmālayaṁ
jighra ghrāṇa mukunda-pāda-tulasīṁ mūrdhan namādhokṣajam ||16||

O tongue, praise Keśava!
O mind, serve the Enemy of Mura!
O hands, worship Śrīdhara!
O ears, you should hear narrations of Acyuta!
O eyes, behold Kṛṣṇa!
O feet, go to the abode of Hari!
O nose, smell the tulasī at the feet of Mukunda!
O head, bow to Adhokṣaja!

O people!
Please hear of this treatment
For birth, death, and disease,
Which the sages learned in yoga led by Yājñavalkya prescribe:
Drink the nectar known as Kṛṣṇa,
The extraordinary, immeasurable inner light.
This supreme tonic, [when] drunk,
Causes absolute extinguishment (nirvāṇa) [i.e., eternal liberation].

Having fully entered the ocean of saṁsāra
And remained situated in the midst of numerous waves of distress,
O mortals,
Please hear of the highest good
I speak to you all in brief:
Setting aside various types of knowledge,
Repeatedly recite in your mind
This mantra, “Namo Nārāyaṇāya
Accompanied by Om
Along with an obeisance [each time].

In comparison to which
The earth becomes a minute particle of dust,
The oceans droplets,
Intense fire a feeble spark,
The wind a very soft breath,
Space a very tiny hole,
Rudra, Brahmā, and so forth insignificant,
And all the suras insects—
That glory of yours,
Having surpassed all limits, triumphs!

O Bhagavān,

My greatly cherished desired end is this:
Indeed in birth after birth,
Let me have unwavering bhakti
Fixed upon your two lotus feet.

Please grant the boat
Of bhakti to your lotus feet,
O you who are the light of the three [worlds]!

This supreme tonic, [when] drunk,
Causes absolute extinguishment (nirvāṇa) [i.e., eternal liberation].

तत्त्वं ब्रुवाणानि परं परस्ता-
न्मधुक्षरन्तीव मुदावहानि।
प्रावर्तय प्राञ्जलिरस्मि जिह्वे
नामानि नारायणगोचराणि ॥२६॥

tattvaṁ bruvāṇāni paraṁ parastān
madhu-kṣarantīva mudāvahāni |
prāvartaya prāñjalir asmi jihve

Indicating the reality,
Higher than the highest,
As though exuding nectar,
Conveying delight—
With palms joined,
I cause you to recite,
O tongue,
Names indicative of Nārāyaṇa.

The seal-jewel of beauty,
The singular decorative jewel
Over the two firm breasts of Rukmiṇī, the jewel of his consorts,
And the crown-jewel of the devas—
Grant us good fortune.

I offer obeisance to Mukunda,
He of wide, lotus-petal eyes,
Teeth like jasmine flowers, the moon, and the conch,

What is the Dispeller of the world’s distress

agatiṁ śaraṇāgataṁ hare
kṛpayā kevalam ātmasāt kuru ||

A mass of thousands of offenses,
Fallen inside the fearsome ocean of material existence,
Shelterless,
And having come [to you] for shelter,
O Hari!
Purely out of grace
Please make [me] your own.

This verse is found neither in the BR nor the TR but is identical with verse forty-eight of Śrī Yāmunācārya’s Stotra-ratna apart from one word [i.e., bhājanaṁ is found in the place of saṅkulaṁ].

मा मे स्त्रीत्वं मा च मे स्यात्कुभावो
मा मूर्खत्वं मा कुदेशेषु जन्म ।
मिथ्यादृष्टिर्मा च मे स्यात्कदाचि-
ज्जातौ जातौ विष्णुभक्तो भवेयम् ॥

buddhyātmanā vānusṛti-prabhāvāt |
karomi yad yat sakalaṁ parasmai

With the body, speech, mind, or senses,

On the strength of adherence [to the directives given by Nārāyaṇa],
All that I do I offer
Solely to Nārāyaṇa, the Supreme [for his pleasure].

tvayā kṛtaṁ tu phala-bhuk tvam eva madhusūdana ||

All that I have done
And that I shall do

How shall I cross over
The unfathomable and difficult to cross

Commentary

The list of reasons given in the verse as to why Śrīpati, Śrī Bhagavān, the Lord of Lakṣmī, is most worthy of one-pointed worship from all living beings, and the list of witnesses of his being such, directly correspond: (1) Prahlāda personally witnessed Bhagavān’s affectionate guardianship (vātsalya) when Bhagavān appeared as Śrī Nṛsiṁhadeva to protect Prahlāda and prove Prahlāda’s words truthful; (2) Vibhīṣaṇa personally witnessed Bhagavān’s vowing to grant fearlessness when Bhagavān appeared as Śrī Rāmacandra and accepted and protected Vibhīṣaṇa even though Vibhīṣaṇa was the brother of Rāvaṇa; (3) Gajendra personally witnessed Bhagavān descending to relieve him of distress as he was being defeated in a battle with a crocodile; (4) Draupaḍī personally witnessed Bhagavān’s magnanimity (audārya) on many occasions, and in particular when he protected her from being disrobed in an assembly of the Kurus; (5) Ahalyā personally witnessed Bhagavān’s extirpation sin when he came to her as Śrī Rāmacandra and relieved her of the curse her husband Gautama cast upon her after she unknowingly consorted with a disguised Indra; and (6) Dhruva personally witnessed Bhagavān’s granting a destination of incalculable auspiciousness when Bhagavān granted him rulership of the uppermost domain within the three worlds.

नाथे श्रीपुरुषोत्तमे त्रिजगतामेकाधिपे चेतसा
सेव्ये स्वस्य पदस्य दातरि परे नारायणे तिष्ठति ।
यं कञ्चित्पुरुषाधमं कतिपयग्रामेशमल्पार्थदं
सेवायै मृगयामहे नरमहो मूका वराका वयम् ॥१७॥

nāthe śrī-puruṣottame tri-jagatām ekādhipe cetasā
sevye svasya padasya dātari pare nārāyaṇe tiṣṭhati |
yaṁ kañcit puruṣādhamaṁ katipaya-grāmeśam alpārthadaṁ
sevāyai mṛgayāmahe naram aho mūkā varākā vayam ||17||

[Even] When we have the Lord,
The beautiful Supreme Puruṣa,
The sole Ruler of the three worlds,
He who is to be served [even just] with the mind,
The giver of [entrance into] his own abode,
The Supreme, Nārāyaṇa,
We seek out for service
Some human being,
The lowest puruṣa,
The chieftain of a few villages
Who grants a little wealth.

The extraordinary, immeasurable inner light.
This supreme tonic, which [when] drunk,
Causes absolute extinguishment (nirvāṇa) [i.e., eternal liberation].

Cupped palms joined,
Head bowed,
Body covered with hair horripilating,
Throat filled with a faltering voice,
And eyes shedding tears—
Please always sustain the lives
Of we who [in this way] relish the nectar
Of meditating on your pair of lotus feet constantly,
O you of lotus eyes!

Higher than the highest,
And aho! As though exuding nectar—
The names indicative of Nārāyaṇa.

This body,
Emaciated by age,
And decrepit with languid joints,
Will surely fall [dead one day].
Why suffer with [troublesome, ultimately ineffective] remedies?
O foolish, wicked mind!

We did not previously engage our speech
In [chanting] that blessed name,
The appellation ‘Nārāyaṇa,’

And thus have attained the misery
Of dwelling in a womb and so on.

Who are deprived of bhakti to your lotus feet;
May I not reject narrations of you,
Compositions [most] worthy to be heard,
And listen to any other type of discourse;
May I not remember those who deny you, even in their minds;
Indeed in birth after birth,
May I not become devprived
Of engaging in your service.

The most beautiful daughter of the ocean [i.e., Lakṣmī] is your wife,
Viriñca [i.e., Brahmā] is your son,
The Vedas are your panegyrist,
The suras are your servants,
Mukti is your grace,
The entire world is your māyā,
Devakī is your mother,
And the son of he of powerful enemy [i.e., Arjuna, the son of Indra] is your friend.
Thus I do not know anyone other than you.

O nose, smell the tulasī at the feet of Mukunda!
O head, bow to Adhokṣaja!

Only the head which is white with dust
From bowing down to Kṛṣṇa

[Only] The intellect which meditates on Mādhava
Shall become taintless by means niyamas and yamas.
[Only] The tongue which praises Nārāyaṇa
Shall be a showerer of nectar at every step.

May the crest-jewel of cowherds—
Who is the gāruḍa-jewel for the snakes of his bhaktas’ adversaries,
The protective jewel for the three worlds,
The raincloud jewel of the cātaka eyes of the gopīs,
The seal-jewel of beauty,
The singular decorative jewel
Over the two firm breasts of Rukmiṇī, the jewel of his beautiful consorts,
And the crown-jewel of objects of meditation—
Grant us good fortune.

Describing sandalwood trees,
Secluded cottages, the bank of the Revā,
And the pots—breasts,
And eye-lids of Lāṭīs [i.e., women of Lāṭa].
The time of persons of mind one-pointed upon him [i.e., Bhagavān]
Passes saying, “Govinda! Janārdana!
Jagannātha! Kṛṣṇa!”

Commentary

Lāṭa is an ancient name for a region of modern Gujarat where along the Revā [i.e., the Narmadā] flows. In this verse the reference to the “women of Lāṭa” (lāṭī) is simply an indicator of attractive women in general.

अयाच्यमक्रेयमयातयाम-
मपाच्यमक्षय्यमदुर्भरं मे ।
अस्त्येव पाथेयमितः प्रयाणे
श्रीकृष्णनामामृतभागधेयम् ॥३३॥

ayācyam akreyam ayātayāmam
apācyam akṣayyam adurbharaṁ me |
asty eva pātheyam itaḥ prayāṇe
śrī-kṛṣṇa-nāmāmṛta-bhāgadheyam ||33||

Unnecessary to beg, unnecessary to purchase,
Unspoiled, unnecessary to cook,
Inexhaustible, and unburdensome to carry—
My only provision
For my journey from here [i.e., for my passing on into the afterlife]
Is a share of the nectar
Of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s name.
