Instructions to the mind
By Śrīmad Raghunātha Dāsa Gosvāmīpāda
gurau goṣṭhe goṣṭhālayiṣu sujane bhūsura-gaṇe
sva-mantre śrī-nāmni vraja-nava-yuva-dvandva-śaraṇe |
sadā dambhaṁ hitvā kuru ratim apūrvām atitarāṁ
aye svāntar bhrātaś caṭubhir abhiyāce dhṛta-padaḥ ||1||
Give up your pride and constantly cultivate intense, unparalleled rati to guru, Vraja, the residents of Vraja, the Vaiṣṇavas, the brāhmaṇas, your mantra, the divine names, and the shelter of the Youthful Couple of Vraja. O mind! O brother! I implore you with kind words, grasping your feet.
na dharmaṁ nādharmaṁ śruti-gaṇa-niruktaṁ kila kuru
vraje rādhā-kṛṣṇa-pracura-paricaryām iha tanuḥ |
śacī-sūnuṁ nandīśvara-pati-sutatve guru-varaṁ
mukunda-preṣṭhatve smara padam ajasraṁ nanu manaḥ ||2||
Never engage in the dharma or adharma described in the Śrutis. [Rather,] Render abundant service to Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa here in Vraja. Always deeply remember the Son of Śacī to be the Son of Nanda and your beloved guru to be Mukunda’s favorite, O mind!
yadīccher āvāsaṁ vraja-bhuvi sa-rāgaṁ prati-janur
yuva-dvandvaṁ tac cet paricaritum ārād abhilaṣeḥ |
svarūpaṁ śrī-rūpaṁ sa-gaṇam iha tasyāgrajam api
sphuṭaṁ premṇā nityaṁ smara nama tadā tvaṁ śṛṇu manaḥ ||3||
If you wish to reside with rāga, birth after birth, in the land of Vraja, and you aspire to soon serve the Youthful Couple, then here with prema always vividly remember and offer obeisance to Svarūpa, Śrī Rūpa, and his elder brother [Śrī Sanātana], and along with their followers. Listen, O mind!
asad-vārtā-veśyā visṛja mati-sarvasva-haraṇīḥ
kathā mukti-vyāghryā na śṛṇu kila sarvātma-gilaṇīḥ |
api tyaktvā lakṣmī-pati-ratim ito vyoma-nayanīṁ
vraje rādhā-kṛṣṇau sva-rati-maṇi-dau tvaṁ bhaja manaḥ ||4||
Stay away from the prostitute of talk of the illusory, who steals the wealth of your intelligence, and never listen to the words of the tigress of mukti, who devours your entire self. Give up rati even to Lakṣmī’s Lord, which leads away from here to Vaikuṇṭha, and in Vraja serve Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, who give the jewel of rati for themselves, O mind!
asac-ceṣṭā-kaṣṭa-prada-vikaṭa-pāśālibhir iha

gale baddhvā hanye ’ham iti bakabhid-vartmapa-gaṇe
kuru tvaṁ phutkārān avati sa yathā tvāṁ mana itaḥ ||5||
“I am being bound tightly around the neck by the formidable highwaymen of lust, anger, and so forth with the painful, fearsome ropes of my own wicked deeds; I am being killed!” Cry out in this way to the guardians on the path to the slayer of Baka so that they save you from these foes, O mind!
are cetaḥ prodyat-kapaṭa-kuṭināṭī-bhara-khara-
kṣaran-mūtre snātvā dahasi katham ātmānam api mām |
sadā tvaṁ gāndharvā-giridhari-pada-prema-vilasat-
sudhāmbhodhau snātvā svam api nitarāṁ māñ ca sukhaya ||6||
O mind! Why do you bath and burn both yourself and myself in the urine pouring from the donkey of outright insincerity and utter deceit? You should bath in the shining ocean of the nectar of prema for Śrī Śrī Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa and completely delight the both of us.
pratiṣṭhāśā dhṛṣṭā śvapaca-ramaṇī me hṛdi naṭet
kathaṁ sādhu-premā spṛśati śucir etan nanu manaḥ |
sadā tvaṁ sevasva prabhu-dayita-sāmantam atulaṁ
yathā tāṁ niṣkāsya tvaritam iha taṁ veśayati saḥ ||7||
“The low-class shrew of desire for pratiṣṭhā is dancing in my heart, so how will the pure prema of the sādhus ever touch me?” O mind! You should always serve the unrivaled tribal chief of Prabhu’s devotee so that he will immediately banish her and establish such prema within your heart.
yathā duṣṭatvaṁ me darayati śaṭhasyāpi kṛpayā
yathā mahyaṁ premāmṛtam api dadāty ujjvalam asau |
yathā śrī-gāndharvā-bhajana-vidhaye prerayati māṁ
tathā goṣṭhe kākvā giridharam iha tvaṁ bhaja manaḥ ||8||
So that he graciously destroys my deceitful wickedness, so that he gives me the splendid nectar of prema, and so that he inspires me in the service of Śrī Gāndharvā, here in Vraja with desperate cries serve Giridhara, O mind!

Remember the Moon of forest of Vraja [i.e., Śrī Kṛṣṇa] to be the Lord of my Mistress [i.e., Śrī Rādhā], the Lordess of the forest of Vraja [i.e., Śrī Rādhā] to be his [i.e., Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s] Lordess, Lalitā to be her unparalleled friend, Viśākhā to be the guru who distributes instructions, and the dear pond [i.e., Rādhā Kuṇḍa] and Girīndra [i.e. Govardhana] to be givers of sight of, and one’s desired rati for, them [i.e., Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa], O mind!
ratiṁ gaurī-līle api tapati saundarya-kiraṇaiḥ
śacī-lakṣmī-satyāḥ paribhavati saubhāgya-balanaiḥ |
vaśī-kāraiś candrāvalī-mukha-navīna-vraja-satīḥ
kṣipaty ārād yā tāṁ hari-dayita-rādhāṁ bhaja manaḥ ||10||
She burns Rati, Gaurī, and Līlā with the rays of her beauty, she defeats Śacī, Lakṣmī, and Satyabhāmā with the strength of her good fortune, and she turns away the chaste young girls of Vraja led by Candrāvalī with her capability to subdue [her beloved]. Serve Śrī Rādhā, the favourite of Hari, O mind!

tad-ijyākhyā-dhyāna-śravaṇa-nati-pañcāmṛtam idaṁ
dhayan nītyā govardhanam anudinaṁ tvaṁ bhaja manaḥ ||11||
To attain with Śrī Rūpa in Vraja the direct service of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa in the company of their associates as they are overwhelmed by Kāmadeva, daily serve Govardhana and meticulously drink the five nectars of worship, narration, meditation, hearing, and obeisances unto him, O mind!

sa-yūthaḥ śrī-rūpānuga iha bhavan gokula-vane

A person who sweetly chants aloud these eleven excellent verses of instruction to the mind and understands all their meanings becomes a follower of Śrī Rūpa and his associates here in the forest of Gokula and attains the incomparable jewel of service to Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.
iti śrī-manaḥ-śikṣādākhyām ekadaśakaṁ sampūrṇam |
Thus this poem of eleven verses entitled Śrī Manaḥ-śikṣādā is complete.
