Rūpa Gosvāmī

sā kāmarūpā sambhoga-tṛṣṇāṁ yā nayati svatām

sā kāmarūpā sambhoga-tṛṣṇāṁ yā nayati svatām |
yad asyāṁ kṛṣṇa-saukhyārtham eva kevalam udyamaḥ ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 1.2.283)

“That [bhakti] which draws desire for complete enjoyment [i.e., amorous union] (sambhoga) into its own self is [known as] kāma-rūpā [-rāgātmikā-bhakti] since within it is only endeavor exclusively for the sake of Kṛṣṇa’s happiness.”

mādhuryādy-āśrayatvena kṛṣṇādīṁs tanute ratiḥ

mādhuryādy-āśrayatvena kṛṣṇādīṁs tanute ratiḥ |
tathānubhūyamānās te vistīrṇāṁ kurvate ratim ||
atas tasya vibhāvādi-catuṣkasya rater api |
atra sāhāyakaṁ vyaktaṁ mitho’jasram avekṣyate ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 2.5.98–99)

“Rati reveals Kṛṣṇa and so forth [i.e., his companions, paraphernalia, abode, etc.] as vessels of [the qualities of] sweetness (mādhurya) and so forth. Being [then] experienced as such, they expand rati. Therefore, continuous mutual assistance of rati and the quad of the vibhāvas and so forth [i.e., the four primary ingredients of rasa other than the sthāyi-bhāva (rati), namely, the vibhāvas, anubhāvas, sāttvika-bhāvas, and sañcarī-bhāvas] is clearly seen here [i.e., in this aforementioned process of rasa manifesting].”

atha vandanam

atha vandanam
praṇamed atha sāṣṭāṅgaṁ tan-mudrāṁ ca pradarśayet |
paṭhet prati-praṇāmaṁ ca prasīda bhagavann iti ||
tad uktam ekādaśe śrī-bhagavatā—
stavair uccāvacaiḥ stotraiḥ paurāṇaiḥ prākṛtair api |
stutvā prasīda bhagavann iti vandeta daṇḍavat ||
(Hari-bhakti-vilāsa: 8.357–358)

“Now, [offering] obeisance [shall be described]: Then, one should prostrate with eight limbs and show the mudrā thereof. With every prostration, one should also declare, ‘Be pleased, O Bhagavān!’ This is stated by Śrī Bhagavān in the Eleventh [Canto, i.e., SB 11.27.45], ‘One should [offer] praise with various stavas and stotras, ancient and vernacular, [entreat Bhagavān,] ‘Be pleased, O Bhagavān,’ and offer obeisance like a stick.”

śrīmad-rūpa-padāmbhoja-rajo’haṁ syāṁ bhave bhave ||
(Dāna-keli-cintāmaṇi: 175)

“Taking a blade of grass between my teeth, I pray for this again and again, ‘May I be a speck of dust at the lotus feet of Śrīmad Rūpa birth after birth.‘”

nātisakto na vairāgya-bhāg asyām adhikāry asau ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 1.2.14)

“One who by some sort of great fortune is possessed of śraddhā in his [i.e., Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s] service and is neither excessively attached nor possessed of non-attachment is a bearer of eligibility (adhikārī) for this [i.e., for vaidhī-bhakti].”

tanoty eṣā pragāḍhārti-bharābhāsatvam ūrjitā ||

“In separation [i.e., when a dear one of Kṛṣṇa is separated from him], however, although retaining the nature of being a transformation of astonishing bliss, this powerful [rati] produces the state of a semblance of an abundance of intense distress.”

yoge rasa-viśeṣatvaṁ gacchanty eva hari-priye ||

“This otherworldly rati for Kṛṣṇa, an astonishment beyond all [other] astonishments, however, certainly in union [i.e., when a meeting with Kṛṣṇa occurs] reaches the distinctive state of rasa in a dear one of Hari.”

tatrāpi gopikāḥ pārtha tatra rādhābhidhā mama ||
(Ādi Purāṇa; cited in Laghu Bhāgavatāmṛta: 2.46; Prīti Sandarbha: 109)

“[Śrī Kṛṣṇa:] In the three worlds, the earth [particularly], where the abode of Vṛndāvana is present, is blessed; therein, furthermore, the gopīs [are blessed], O Pārtha, and therein mine [i.e., the gopī most dear to me] by the name of Rādhā [is (most) blessed].”

avicintya-prabhāvatvād atra kiṁ ca na durghaṭam ||

“Therefore, because of the utterly inconceivable power of Prabhu’s dear ones, abode, and time, nothing is impossible in this regard [i.e., it is not impossible for time and space to expand and contract to accommodate innumerable participants in Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s līlās in Vraja and their having simultaneously distinct perceptions of those līlās and their environs].”

ślāghyāṅga-sanniveśo yaḥ suramyāṅgaḥ sa kathyate ||
yathā—
mukhaṁ candrākāraṁ karabha-nibham uru-dvayam idaṁ
bhujau stambhārambhau sarasija-vareṇyaṁ kara-yugam |
kavāṭābhaṁ vakṣaḥ-sthalam aviralaṁ śroṇi-phalakaṁ
parikṣāmo madhyaḥ sphurati mura-hantur madhurimā ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 2.1.45–46)

“One whose [body-] parts are of praiseworthy formation is called one who has beautiful parts (suramyāṅga), as [is described] in [the following verse],
‘A face with the appearance of the moon,
Thighs like elephant trunks,
Arms like the beginnings [i.e., bases] of pillars,
Hands like excellent lotuses,
A chest like a [broad] door panel,
Sides compact,
Midsection lean—
The Slayer of Mura‘s sweetness shines!’”
