vedānta-vākya-kusuma-grathanārthatvāt sūtrāṇām |
(Śārīraka-bhāṣya of Śaṅkarācārya on Vedānta-sūtra: 1.1.2)
“The purpose of the sūtras is tying together the flowers of the statements of the Vedānta [i.e., the Upaniṣads].”
Commentary
The Vedas are often compared to a desire-tree, so Śaṅkarācārya compares the Vedānta, the concluding section of the Vedas, that is, the Upaniṣads, to the flowers of this tree and the Vedānta-sūtra to a garland of these flowers, as the word sūtra also literally means thread.
