The Nectar of a Pastime within a Dream

By Śrī Viśvanātha Cakravartīpāda

Introduction

priye svapne dṛṣṭā sarid ina-sutevātra pulinaṁ
yathā vṛndāraṇye naṭana-paṭavas tatra bahavaḥ |
mṛdaṅgādyaṁ vādyaṁ vividham iha kaścid dvijamaṇiḥ
sa vidyud-gaurāṅgaḥ kṣipati jagatīṁ prema-jaladhau ||1||

[Rādhā says to Kṛṣṇa:] “O Beloved!
In a dream,
I saw a river like the Yamunā here [as in Vraja],
A bank as in Vṛndāvana,
Many experts in dance there [as there are here in Vraja],
And various instruments beginning with the mṛdaṅga.
A Jewel among the twice-born,
Someone of shining golden figure,
Was tossing the world into an ocean of prema.

kadācit kṛṣṇeti pralapati rudan karhicid asau
kva rādhe hā heti śvasiti patati pro
jjhati dhṛtim |
naṭaty ullāsena kvacid api gaṇaiḥ svaiḥ praṇayibhis
tṛṇādi-brahmāntaṁ jagad atitarāṁ rodayati saḥ ||2||

“Sometimes he was lamenting,
Crying out, ‘Kṛṣṇa!’
Sometimes he was sighing,
‘Where are you, O Rādhā! Hā! Hā!’
Sometimes he was falling down,
[Sometimes] He was losing [all his] composure,
Sometimes He was dancing with elation
Along with his own loving companions,
And sometimes he was causing the [entire] world,
From the grass up to Brahmā,
To weep profusely.

tato buddhir bhrāntā mama samajani prekṣya kim aho
bhavet so’yaṁ kāntaḥ kim ayam aham evāsmi na paraḥ |
ahaṁ cet kva preyān mama sa kila cet kvāham iti me
bhramo bhūyo bhūyān abhavad atha nidrāṁ gatavatī ||3||

“Then, seeing [this],
My intellect became bewildered,
[I thought,] ‘Aho!
Could he, my Beloved, be this [Jewel among the twice-born]?
[Or,] Am indeed I, and no other, this [Jewel among the twice-born]?
If I am [this Jewel among the twice-born],
Where is my Beloved?
If indeed he [viz., my Beloved] is [this Jewel among the twice-born],
Where am I?’
In this way I repeatedly felt total confusion.
Then I fell into deep sleep.”

[Kṛṣṇa replies to Rādhā:] “O Beloved,
O Curious Girl,
You were previously shown
Forms such as the Lord of Ramā [i.e., Nārāyaṇa] by me,
And certainly no amazement occurred [in you upon seeing them].
[So,] How was this brāhmaṇa [you saw in your dream] able to amaze you?
Why do you undergo such confusion?
Who is he really?
Hanta!
What is this?”

iti procya preṣṭhāṁ kṣaṇam atha parāmṛṣya ramaṇo
hasann ākūtajñaṁ vyanudad atha taṁ kaustubha-maṇim |
tathā dīpt
iṁ tene sapadi sa yathā dṛṣṭam iva tad-
vilāsānāṁ lakṣmaṁ sthira-cara-gaṇaiḥ sarvam abhavat ||5||

After speaking thus to his Beloved,
This Lover [viz., Kṛṣṇa],
Then reflected for a moment,
Smiled,
And then displayed his Kaustubha jewel,
Which was cognizant of his intention.
It then immediately emitted light
In a manner such that
All the features of those pastimes [of that brāhmaṇa]
Along with [all] the mobile and immobile entities
Became seen [again by Rādhā] just as they were [seen by her previously in her dream].

vibhāvyātha proce priyatama mayā jñātam akhilaṁ
tavākūtaṁ yat tvaṁ smitam atanuthās tat tvam asi saḥ |
sphuṭaṁ yan nāvādīr yad abhimatir atrāpy aham iti
sphurantī me tasmād aham api sa evety anumime ||6||

After [seeing all this and] assessing [it all],
She then said,
“O Most Beloved,
Your entire intention has been understood by me.
Since you displayed a smile [before showing me this brāhmaṇa],
You are he [viz., this brāhmaṇa].
[Yet] Since you did not say clearly [that you are this brāhmaṇa],
And since my own sense of self,
[i.e., the feeling,] ‘I am in this [brāhmaṇa] too,’
Is apparent [to me],
I agree that I too am indeed he.

yad apy asmākīnaṁ rati-padam idaṁ kaustubha-maṇiṁ
pradīpyātraivādīdṛśad akhila-jīvān api bhavān |
sva-śaktyāvirbhūya svam akhila-vilāsaṁ pratijanaṁ
nigadya premābdhau punar api tad ādhāsyasi jagat ||7||

“Since you have shown all jīvas as well to be [present]
Within the Kaustubha jewel,
By causing this object of fondness of ours [viz., this jewel],
To shine [as aforementioned],
[I understand that] You will also appear by means of your own potency,
Make yourself and all your pastimes known to every person,
And again place the world in the ocean of prema.

yad uktaṁ gargeṇa vraja-pati-samakṣaṁ śruti-vidā
bhavet pīto varṇaḥ kvacid api tavaitan na hi mṛṣā |
ataḥ svapnaḥ satyo mama ca na tadā bhrāntir abhavat
tvam evāsau sākṣād iha yad anubhūto’si tad ṛtam ||8||

“Since it was said in the presence of Vraja’s king by Garga,
Who is conversant in the Śrutis,
That you can also sometimes have a golden complexion,
This [i.e., your appearing again as this brāhmaṇa of shining golden figure] is certainly not false.
Therefore, my dream is true,
And no bewilderment happened [to me] then.
He [viz., this brāhmaṇa] is verily you yourself,
And that which you were perceived [by me] to be in this [dream]
Is [also] real.”

avāptaś caitanyaṁ praṇaya-jaladhau khelati yato
bhṛśaṁ dhatte tasminn atula-karuṇāṁ kuñja-nṛpatiḥ ||9||

Aho!
One of fine disposition
The bee [lit., ‘nectar-drinker’] of whose heart
Shall drink this Svapnāmṛtam [lit., ‘Dream-nectar’]
Shall very soon awaken
From the dream of doubt in this regard
[i.e., in regard to the golden complexioned form in which Śrī Kṛṣṇa appears].
Becoming one who has attained “consciousness” (caitanya) [i.e., realized the identity of Śrī Caitanya],
One [then] sports in an ocean of uninhibited love
Since the King of arbors [viz., Śrī Kṛṣṇa of Vraja himself] profusely bestows
Incomparable grace upon him.
