Samatva (Samatā)

sādhūnāṁ sama-cittānāṁ sutarāṁ mat-kṛtātmanām

sādhūnāṁ sama-cittānāṁ sutarāṁ mat-kṛtātmanām |
darśanān no bhaved bandhaḥ puṁso’kṣṇoḥ savitur yathā ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 10.10.41; cited in Bhakti Sandarbha: 179)

“As there is no longer any bondage for the eyes upon seeing the sun, so there is no longer any bondage for a person upon seeing sādhus who are equanimous and thus of mind fixed upon me.”

maitryā cākhila-jantuṣu |
samatvena ca sarvātmā bhagavān samprasīdati ||

“Bhagavān, the Ātmā of all, is very pleased by friendship (between peers) and equality towards all living beings.”

yat pṛthivyāṁ vrīhi-yavaṁ hiraṇyaṁ paśavaḥ striyaḥ |
nālam ekasya tat sarvam iti matvā śamaṁ vrajet ||

“All the rice, barley, gold, animals, and women on earth are not sufficient for one [person]. Deliberate on this and take to equanimity.”

vaiṣṇavera nindya-karma nāhi pāḍe kāṇe |
sabe kṛṣṇa-bhajana kare—ei-mātra jāne ||
(Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 3.13.133)

“He [i.e., Raghunātha Bhaṭṭa] would not take into his ears [talk of] censurable acts of Vaiṣṇavas. ‘Everyone engages in Kṛṣṇa-bhajana.’ He perceived only of this.”

tasmād dharma-pradhānena bhavitavyaṁ yatātmanā |
tathā ca sarva-bhūteṣu vartitavyaṁ yathātmani ||
(Mahābhārata: 12.161.8)

[Vidura to Yudhiṣṭhira:] “Therefore, with dharma as one’s chief object, one should be self-controlled. And one should treat all beings as oneself [i.e., one should treat others as one would treat oneself].”

duḥkhito’pi cared dharmaṁ yatra kutrāśrame rataḥ |
samaḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu na liṅgaṁ dharma-kāraṇam ||

“Even in distress, one situated in any āśrama should adhere to dharma and be equal towards all living beings. [Mere] Markings are not causes of dharma.”
