Humility

dīnere adhika dayā kare bhagavān

dīnere adhika dayā kare bhagavān |
kulīna, paṇḍita, dhanīra baḍa abhimāna ||
(Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 3.4.68)

”Bhagavān bestows greater grace upon the humble. The noble, learned, and wealthy have great pride.”

vidyā dadāti vinayaṁ vinayād yāti pātratām

vidyā dadāti vinayaṁ vinayād yāti pātratām |
pātratvād dhanam āpnoti dhanād dharmaṁ tatas sukham ||
(Hitopadeśa: Maṅgalācaraṇam, 6)

“Knowledge gives one humility [alt., discipline]. Through humility one attains worthiness. Through worthiness one acquires wealth, and through wealth come dharma and thereafter happiness.”

naratvaṁ durlabhaṁ loke vidyā tatra sudurlabhā |
śīlaṁ ca durlabhā tatra vinayas tatra sudurlabhaḥ||
(Agni Purāṇa)

“In this world, human life is rare, and therein [i.e., among human beings] education is very rare. Therein [i.e., among the educated], character is rare, and therein [i.e., among persons of good character], humility is very rare.”

nāguṇī guṇinaṁ vetti guṇī guṇiṣu matsarī |
guṇī ca guṇarāgī ca viralo saralo janaḥ ||
(Subhāṣita-ratna-bhāṇḍāgāra: 45.13)

“The unqualified do not recognize the qualified, and the qualified are [often] envious of the [others who are] qualified. A sincere person who is both qualified and appreciative of qualities [in others] is rare.”

tā̐hāra caraṇa dhuñā karo̐ muñi pāne ||
(Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 3.20.151)

“I wash the feet of a person who listens to Caitanya-caritāmṛta and drink [the sanctified water thereafter].”

tathāpi tṛptiḥ kasyāpi naivodeti kadācana |
prema-tṛṣṇā ca vividhā dainya-mātā vivardhate ||
(Bṛhad Bhāgavatāmṛta: 2.6.213)

“Still [i.e., even though every Vraja-vāsīs feels that they alone are the most dear to Kṛṣṇa, acts as such with Kṛṣṇa, and observes Kṛṣṇa genuinely reciprocate with them as such], satiation never arises within even one of them. [Rather,] The thirst produced by [their] prema, which is variegated and the mother of dainya (humility), increases [continuously].”

kṣāntir avyartha-kālatvaṁ

kṣāntir avyartha-kālatvaṁ viraktir māna-śūnyatā |
āśā-bandhaḥ samutkaṇṭhā nāma-gāne sadā ruciḥ ||
āsaktis tad-guṇākhyāne prītis tad-vasati-sthale |
ity ādayo’nubhāvāḥ syur jāta-bhāvāṅkure jane ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: Pūrva-vibhāga, 3.25–26)

“(1) Forbearance, (2) not wasting time, (3) non-attachment, (4) pridelessness, (5) hopefulness, (6) longing, (7) constant taste for chanting the name, (8) attachment to discussion of his [i.e., Bhagavān’s] qualities, and (9) fondness for his abode—these and other indications shall manifest in a person in whom the sprout of bhāva has arisen.”

tat te’nukampāṁ susamīkṣamāṇo
bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam |
hṛd-vāg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te
jīveta yo mukti-pade sa dāya-bhāk ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.14.8)

“One who can perceive your grace fully and properly, endure the reactions to one’s own past actions, and live on offering obeisance unto you with mind, body, and words is an heir to the plane of mukti [i.e., freedom from ignorance and engagement in your eternal service].”
