adhruveṇa śarīreṇa

adhruveṇa śarīreṇa pratikṣaṇa-vināśinā |
dhruvaṁ yo nārjayed dharmaṁ sa śocyo mūḍha-cetanaḥ ||
(Mahāsubhāṣita-saṅgraha)

“One who does not acquire imperishable dharma with the perishable body, which is subject to destruction at every moment, is pitiable and foolish.”

mūrkho hi jalpatāṁ puṁsāṁ śrutvā vācaḥ śubhāśubhāḥ |
aśubhaṁ vākyam ādatte purīṣam iva sūkaraḥ ||
prājñas tu jalpatāṁ puṁsāṁ śrutvā vācaḥ śubhāśubhāḥ |
guṇavad-vākyam ādatte haṁsaḥ kṣīram ivāṁbhasaḥ ||

“A fool, having heard a person’s beneficial and unbeneficial words, extracts the unbeneficial statements just as a hog extracts excrement [from mud]. One who is wise, however, having heard a person’s beneficial and unbeneficial words, extracts the valuable statements just as a swan extracts milk from water.”

krodhaś ca dṛḍha-vādaś ca para-vākyeṣv anādaraḥ ||

“Five characteristics of a fool: pride [alt., arrogance], harsh speech [alt., foul language], anger, stubbornness, and disregard of [alt., lack of respect for] others’ statements.”

“Those who are envious and witless can only see faults, while those who are cognizant of qualities consider only qualities. Those who see only qualities and not faults are the greatest sādhus, and they can find complete satisfaction.”

vrajanti te mūḍha-dhiyaḥ parābhavaṁ
bhavanti māyāviṣu ye na māyinaḥ|
praviśya hi ghnanti śaṭhās tathāvidhān
asaṁvṛtāṅgān niśitā iveṣavaḥ ||
(Kirātārjunīyam: 1.30)

“Those of dull intellect who do not become deceitful with the deceitful [i.e., who fail to employ deceit in dealing with others employing deceit against them when no non-deceitful means of resolution is viable] are defeated. Cheaters enter among and destroy those of this sort [i.e., those who are honest but lack this practical insight] as sharp arrows enter into [i.e., pierce] and destroy unarmored bodies.”

analaḥ śīta-nāśāya viṣa-nāśāya gāruḍam |
viveko duḥkha-nāśāya sarva-nāśāya durmatiḥ ||

“Fire destroys cold, gāruḍa [i.e., a charm applied in the case of snake bites] destroys poison, discrimination destroys sorrow, and foolishness [alt., ignorance, delusion, misunderstanding, conceit, depression, enmity, etc.] destroy everything.”

purāṇam ity eva na sādhu sarvaṁ
na cāpi kāvyaṁ navam ity avadyam |
santaḥ parīkṣyānyatarad bhajante
mūḍhaḥ para-pratyaya-neya-buddhiḥ ||
(Mālavikāgnimitra: 1.2)

“Not all [poems] are good because they are ancient. And a poem is not contemptible because it is modern. The wise examine and favor either of the two [according to their respective merit]. The fool is he whose intellect has to be led by the convictions of others.”

nija-bhrame mūrkha-loka kare kolāhale ||

“[Mahāprabhu to Balabhadra Bhaṭṭācārya:] Why would Kṛṣṇa give darśana in the Age of Kali? As a result of their own misunderstanding, foolish people make a tumult.”

mūrkhera vākye mūrkha hailā paṇḍita ha-iyā ||

“Prabhu then slapped him [i.e., Balabhadra Bhaṭṭācārya, and said], ‘Because of the words of fools, you [too] have become a fool [even] while being a paṇḍita [i.e., although you are learned, you have failed to deliberate on what you have heard and thus acted like a fool].”

anya-kāmī yadi kare kṛṣṇera bhajana |
nā māgileo kṛṣṇa tāre dena sva-caraṇa ||
kṛṣṇa kahe—āmā bhaje, māge viṣaya-sukha |
amṛta chāḍi’ viṣa māge—ei baḍa mūrkha ||
āmi vijña, ei mūrkhe viṣaya kene diba? |
sva-caraṇāmṛta diyā viṣaya bhulāiba ||
(Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 2.22.37–39)

“If someone with other desires [i.e., someone who desires anything other than Kṛṣṇa] engages in worship of Kṛṣṇa, then Kṛṣṇa gives them his own feet even though they did not ask [for them]. Kṛṣṇa says [i.e., considers], ‘They worship me but ask for the pleasure of sense objects; they reject nectar and ask for poison. They are a great fool. I [on the contrary] am wise. [So,] Why should I give this fool objects of the senses? I will give them the nectar of my own feet and make them forget about objects of the senses.’”
