“As I arise, Kiśorī …
As I sit, Kiśorī …
Kiśorī has become my all.
Kiśorī is my service.
Kiśorī is my worship.
Kiśorī is the star of my eyes.

Commentary

Kiśorī [lit., ‘adolescent girl’] is a nickname Kṛṣṇa uses for Rādhā. The first three verses in this pada are statements of Kṛṣṇa. “As I arise, Kiśorī …” (uṭhite Kiśorī) means, “When I arise in the morning, and when I arise at any other time during the day, I think only of Rādhā.” Similarly, “As I sit, Kiśorī …” (basite Kiśorī) means, “When I sit up in bed after I wake up in the morning, and at any time I sit during the day, I think only of Rādhā.” “Kiśorī has become my all” (Kiśorī ha-ila sārā) means, “I cannot think of anyone or anything except Rādhā.” “Kiśorī is my service; Kiśorī is my worship” (Kiśorī bhajana, Kiśorī pujana) means, “Rādhā is the ultimate object of all my activities, the aim I seek in all the service and worship I offer.” “Kiśorī is the star of my eyes” (Kiśorī nayāna-tārā) means, “I cherish nothing more than beholding Rādhā.”

Commentary

“At home, Rādhā …” (gṛha-mājhe Rādhā) means, “When I am at home, I think only of Rādhā.” “In the forest, Rādhā …” (kānanete Rādhā) means, “When I go out to forest to herd the cows or for any other task, I think only of Rādhā, and my purpose in going there is only to create a means of meeting with Rādhā.” “I see everything filled with Rādhā” (Rādhāmaya saba dekhi) means, “No matter what I see, I think only of Rādhā, and whatever I see, I consider only how it relates to my meeting with and loving Rādhā.” “As I lie still, Rādhā …” (śayanete Rādhā) means, “When I lie down to rest, I think only of Rādhā.” “As I move, Rādhā …” (gamanete Rādhā) means, “Whenever I go anywhere, I think only of Rādhā and how I can meet her.” “My eyes have become filled with Rādhā” (uṭhite Kiśorī) means, “I see everything only in relation to Rādhā, be it as an impediment to meeting Rādhā or a reminder of her.”

In affection, Rādhikā …
In love, Rādhikā …
Rādhikā in the fetter of longing …
Worshiping Rādhā,
I have attained the name Rādhā-vallabha
Out of great desire.”

Commentary

“In affection, Rādhikā …” (snehete Rādhikā) means, “Whenever I receive any affection, I think only of Rādhā.” “In love, Rādhikā …” (premete Rādhikā) means, “Whenever I receive love, I think only of Rādhā.” “Rādhikā in the fetter of longing …” (Rādhikā ārati pāśe) means, “My longing for Rādhā is like a fetter that pulls my mind towards only Rādhā and no other object.” The word ārati could also be construed to mean loving attachment (anurāga) or heartache (ārti) in addition, or in lieu of, longing (utkaṇṭhā), as per the entries in the glossary of the edition of Vaiṣṇava Dāsa’s Pada-kalpa-taru edited by Satīśacandra Rāya. The name Rādhā-vallabha can mean either “Rādhā’s Beloved” or “He whose beloved in Rādhā.” “Worshiping Rādhā, I have attained the name Rādhā-vallabha out of great desire” (Rādhāre bhajiyā, Rādhā-vallabha nāma, peyechi aneka āśe) means, “Out of great desire, I worship Rādhā, and as a result of all the worship of Rādhā I have done, I have become known by the name Rādhā-vallabha.”

Hearing the sweetness
Of Śyāma’s words,
Rādhā floats in the bliss of prema.
Caṇḍī Dāsa says,
“Their love [for one another]
Is a bond from heart to heart.”

Commentary

“Hearing the sweetness of Śyāma’s words, Rādhā floats in the bliss of prema” (Śyāmera vacana, mādhurī śuniyā, premānande bhāse Rādhā) means that Kṛṣṇa’s statements in the previous three verses, whehn they are recounted to Rādhā by a sakhī who either overheard Kṛṣṇa speaking them to a friend or was told them by Kṛṣṇa himself, are like a stream of sweetness (mādhurya), and after hearing them and reflecting on the depth of Kṛṣṇa’s prema for her, “Rādhā floats in the bliss of prema” (premānande bhāse Rādhā), meaning, she becomes elated by the bliss of being the object of such prema from Kṛṣṇa, or, she becomes swept away by the bliss of her prema for Kṛṣṇa as she now muses as to how she will next express her prema to Kṛṣṇa. The author Caṇḍī Dāsa’s final statement, “Their love [for one another] is a bond from heart to heart” (do̐hāra pīriti parāṇe parāṇe bā̐dhā) conveys that Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa’s love is beyond all conventional forms of relation between kinsmen, friends, and even spouses; it is a bond of prema purely between their hearts that transcends all social conventions and completely captivates their minds such that they can think only of one another and nothing else.
