tuṅga maṇi mandire

Commentary: In this verse, Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s pūrva-rāga for Śrī Rādhikā is described through statements of a friend of Kṛṣṇa, some suggest Subala, spoken to Kṛṣṇa as he walks out to the forest and Śrī Rādhikā watches him from a distance on the roof of her father’s palace.

তুঙ্গ মণি মন্দিরে ঘন বিজুরি সঞ্চরে
মেহরুচি-বসন-পরিধানা ।
যত যুবতি-মণ্ডলী পন্থ-মাঝ পেখলি
কোই নহ রাইক সমানা ॥১॥

tuṅga maṇi mandire ghana vijuri sañcare
meha-ruci-vasana-paridhānā |
yata yuvati-maṇḍalī pantha-mājha pekhali
koi naha rāika samānā ||1||

Wearing a garment
With the luster of clouds
And fine ornaments
Upon her figure—
[Which resembles]
A bundle of suspended lightning—
Among all the girls
I saw on the path,
None is equal to Rāi.

অতএ বিহি তোহারি সুখ লাগি ।
রূপে গুণে সায়রি সৃজিল ইহ নায়রি
ধনিরে ধনি ধন্য তুয়া ভাগি ॥২॥

atae vihi tohāri sukha lāgi |
rūpe guṇe sāyarī sṛjila iha nāyari
dhanire dhani dhanya tuyā bhāgi ||2||

Therefore,
For your pleasure,
Destiny has created this ladylove,
[Who is] An ocean of beauty and qualities
And fortunate for the fortunate.
[Most] Fortunate is your fate!

Commentary: “Fortunate for the fortunate” (dhanire dhani) conveys that Śrī Rādhikā, who makes anymore who even sees her, and all the more so someone who she herself adores, fortunate, makes even Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is already considered most fortunate, even more fortunate. Thus Kṛṣṇa’s friend exclaims to Kṛṣṇa, “Fortunate is your fate!” (dhanya tuyā bhāgi).

দিবস অরু যামিনী রাই অনুরাগিণী
তোহারি হৃদি মাঝ রহু জাগি ।
নিমেষে নব নৌতুনা সুবেশা মৃগলোচনা
অতএ তুঁহু উহারি অনুরাগী ॥৩॥

divasa aru yāminī rāi anurāgiṇī
tohāri hṛdi mājha rahu jāgi |
nimeṣe nava nautunā suveśā mṛga-locanā
atae tu̐hu uhāri anurāgī ||3|| 

Day and night,
Anurāgiṇī Rāi,
remains manifest
In your heart
At every moment
Newly afresh
With fine dress and doe-eyes.
Therefore,
You are her anurāgī.

Commentary: By describing Śrī Rādhikā as anurāginī, “she who possess anurāga,” that is, loving attachment, Kṛṣṇa’s friend informs Kṛṣṇa that she is in love with him, and by telling Kṛṣṇa that he is “her anurāgī,” he shows that he, as Kṛṣṇa’s intimate friend, can understand that Kṛṣṇa has also fallen in love with her.

রতন-অট্টালিকা- উপরে রহু রাধিকা
হেরি হেরি অচল পদ পাণি ৷
রসিকজন-মানসে হরিগুণ-সুধারসে
লাগি রহু শশিশেখর-বাণী ॥৪॥

ratana-aṭṭālikā- upare rahu rādhikā
heri heri acala pada pāṇi |
rasika-jana-mānase hari-guṇa-sudhā-rase
lāgi rahu śaśiśekhara-vāṇī ||4||

Rādhikā remains
Atop her jeweled palace
Looking and looking
With unmoving feet and hands.
For the sake of the rasa
Of the nectar of Hari’s qualities,
Śaśiśekshara’s words
Remain in the minds of rasikas.

Commentary: Here the friend illustrates Śrī Rādhikā’s anurāga. Her “looking and looking”(heri heri) refers to her watching Kṛṣṇa as he walks out to the forest each morning, and “with unmoving feet and hands” (acala pada pāṇi) means she becomes transfixed as she does so out of love for Kṛṣṇa.
