Sūkti Sudhākara

upakāriṣu yaḥ sādhuḥ sādhutve tasya ko guṇaḥ

upakāriṣu yaḥ sādhuḥ sādhutve tasya ko guṇaḥ |
apakāriṣu yaḥ sādhuḥ sa sādhuḥ sadbhir ucyate ||
(Mahāsubhāṣita-saṅgraha: 7031)

“What sort of quality is the goodness of one who is good [only] to those who are helpful [to oneself]? One who is good [even] to those who are harmful [to oneself] is said to be good [i.e., a sādhu] by the wise.”

sadbhis tu līlayā proktaṁ śilā-likhitam akṣaram ||

“The words [even] under oath of the wicked are like letters written on water [i.e., completely insubstantial]. The [even] playful words of sādhus, however, are like words written in stone [i.e., they certainly prove truthful].”

sādhūnāṁ sama-cittānāṁ mukunda-caraṇaiṣiṇām |
upekṣyaiḥ kiṁ dhana-stambhair asadbhir asad-āśrayaiḥ ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 10.10.18)

“What purpose do sādhus who are of equal mind and desirous [only] of Mukunda’s feet have with those who are proud of wealth, asat, sheltered in the asat, and [thus] fit to be ignored?”

“The sun is red while rising, and red while setting as well. In both good fortune and misfortune [alt., prosperity or adversity], the great are uniform [i.e., consistent, unwavering, and steadfast].”

aprekṣya klamam ātmano vidadhati prītyā pareṣāṁ priyaṁ
lajjante dūritodyamād iva nija-stotrānubandhād api |
vidyā-vitta-kulādibhiś ca yad amī yānti kramān namratāṁ
ramyā kāpi satām iyaṁ vijayate naisargikī prakriyā ||
(Vidagdha-mādhava-nāṭaka: 1.11)

“Not considering their own fatigue, they lovingly please others. They feel ashamed as a result of [hearing] their own praise just as others do so as a result of commiting a sin. As far as they become endowed with knowledge, wealth, nobility, and so forth, so also they become humble. This extraordinary, delightful, and natural conduct of the sat [i.e., of sādhus] triumphs.”

“Therefore, O King, Bhagavān Hari is to be heard about, to be praised, and to be remembered by human beings always and everywhere with the full self [i.e., with full attention].”

tac ca śrī-ballavī-prāṇanātha-pāda-sarojayoḥ |
premaiva tad-vraja-prema-sājātīyaṁ na cetarat ||
(Bṛhad Bhāgavatāmṛta: 2.5.214)

“That [i.e., your sādhana to attain your Iṣṭadeva], moreover, is simply prema for the lotus feet of the beautiful ballavī’s Beloved [lit., the Lord of the gopīs’ prāṇas, that is, hearts, lives, or vital airs] which resembles the [highly celebrated] prema for him [found] in Vraja, and is not otherwise.”
