dhī-dhṛti-smṛti-vibhraṁśaḥ samprāptiḥ kāla-karmaṇām

dhī-dhṛti-smṛti-vibhraṁśaḥ samprāptiḥ kāla-karmaṇām |
asātmyārthāgamaś ceti jñātavyā duḥkha-hetavaḥ ||
(Caraka-saṁhita: 4.1.98)

“Divergence of the intellect, will, or memory [i.e., prajñāparādhas], the onset of a time period [e.g., a season], karma [i.e., the results of one‘s past actions], and contact with unwholesome objects of the senses are to be known as causes of suffering.”

amantram akṣaraṁ nāsti nāsti mūlam anauṣadham |
ayogyaḥ puruṣo nāsti yojakas tatra durlabhaḥ ||

“There is no phoneme that is not a mantra [i.e., that cannot function as a mantra]. There is no root that is not a medicine [i.e., that cannot function as a medicine for some ailment]. There is no person that is incapable [i.e., that cannot somehow perform some sort of useful function]. Rare then is the employer [i.e., someone who knows the potential of things and how to make good use of them under varying circumstances].”

śāstrāṇy adhītyāpi bhavanti mūrkhā
yas tu kriyāvān puruṣaḥ sa vidvān |
sucintitaṁ caiṣadham āturāṇāṁ
na nāma-mātreṇa karoty arogam ||
(Hitopadeśa: 1.164)

“Even after studying the śāstras, fools remain [fools], whereas a person who engages in practice [of the knowledge they have studied] becomes [truly] learned, just as a well-considered medicine for sick persons does not remove a disease with only its name [i.e., the medicine has to actually be taken properly, and so also knowledge has to actually be put into practice properly for it to be realized and one to attain the benefit such knowledge produces].”

mantre tīrthe dvije deve daivajñe bheṣaje gurau |
yādṛśī bhāvanā yasya siddhir bhavati tādṛśī ||
(Skanda Purāṇga: 5.3.227.38–9; cited in Pañcatantra: 5.96)

“In regard to a mantra, tīrtha, brāhmaṇa, deva, astrologer, medicine, or guru—as is one’s attitude (bhāvanā), so is one’s attainment.”

pathye’sati gadārtasya kim auṣadha-niṣevaṇaiḥ ||
(Vaidya-jīvana: 1.10)

“When someone suffering from a disease follows a proper diet, then what is the use of taking medicine? [And] When someone suffering from a disease does not follow a proper diet, then what is the use of taking medicine?”
